Thats terrible, i'm sorry! Will homeowners insurance pay for the stuff that got damaged? I know my parents have a sump pump in the basement that's supposed to help.

not sure i'm looking into it. it's not stuff that's really that important so i'm not sure if they will pay. it's a lof of my daughter's old clothes and holliday decorations and stuff like that, also a bed. so we'll see.

I hope some of it is salvagable. It always seems worse when our memories are stored somewhere and are then destroyed. I so commiserate with you. We had a flood earlier this year when we had a freak rainstorm and the foundation leaked. Thankfully none of my books were ruined. They were in bankers boxes and that kept the water out. Insurance says they won't cover it because it didn't meet some terms in the policy. Oh well, when the ground thaws we'll get it dug up and find out what the grand total will be. Labour, carpet, drywall, permacrete, insulation and paint. Hopefully that's all.

I'm so sorry to hear this. I bet that made you get sick to your stomach when that happened. Do you have homeowners insurance to cover the damaged items? If so, call your insurance company and tell them your hot water tank busted and it flooded the basement area and soaked alot of your things wet down there. They will send an agent out to look at the damage and they will help you recover the cost to replace some of the things. Did it totally ruin everything that got wet down there or can you dry some of it out and it will be okay?

Oh bless your heart that is awful. I would suggest taking the important things and laying them out in front of the fan. It may help you to keep a few things. I know we had a flood once and the water was up to my knees. We were able to salvage a few things. Make sure to rip out any carpet you have down there and if you have wood on the walls you will need to remove them because mildew will build up behind them. If the walls are just painted or are cement use a mixture of bleach and water to wipe them down and then paint with Kilz to prevent mildew from growing. I wish you the best of luck.
