If You Were Planning To Buy A New Vehicle

If you were needing a different vehicle what would you be more tempted to do in my case. I'm 56 years old and never had a new vehicle. Would you look for a good used car or would you get a new one. If you did choose new would you buy it or would you lease it ? What are your views on the topic of leasing or buying. I want to say thank you for your responses in advance.

Well considering youve never had a new vehicle, I am leaning towards that. However I have had new cars and good certified used cars, and I cannot stand how much value they lose when they are new and you take them home. So if your ok with that, I would say GO NEW!! Otherwise get a great certified used car. Your not missing much buying new. I only buy used now!

I found your answer very interesting. I always thought young people like new vehicles.

I forgot...leasing is the most expensive way to buy a car. Don't do it.

Yes I'm not up on all my info re: leasing. I guess being old fashioned the thing I didn't like is you never really own the vehicle.

I will be 65 next Monday , I have only been driving for 17 years , I love to drive , I always had used cars but my Dad has Alzheimer's now and had to give up driving so we traded in my car and his and put the extra to it and I got my first new car , it is a sky blue Citroen Picasso desire and I love it ,. I got it in October 2005 , It wont require an MOT for 3 years and it will save me a lot of money not having to renew thing that are worn out , I love it because I am under 5 ft and the drivers seat lift so I can see everything around me , I just love it , I would say if you can possibly afford it go for new , it saves you in the long run xx

I'm in a different class along the car buying deal. I get an employee discount on new GM cars as my dad retired from there after 32 years. I bought a 2005 Buick LeSabre in 2005 and got a total discount of nearly %30 with trade in rebates etc. So for me it's always going to be a new GM made vehicle. I've never leased a car nor bought a new car till recently. So I have no idea on the leasing aspect at all. As far as used I look at it as buying someone elses problem car is all. Not always a good idea. Have a mechanic check out a used car before buying is a good idea. Thanks for the discussion also. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I would never own anything other than a Buick. I've looked at the new ones and you need nothing less than 36,000.00 for brand new. If you're buying a Ford or Dodge or almost anything else you're looking anywhere between 18,000.00 to 28,000.00. The Buicks are expensive but you get what you pay for. I paid 14,000.00 for my 1994 Buick Century in 1996, it only had about 20 thousand miles on it. I have hardly spent anything at all in repairs and I'm still driving the ol girl. I paid for a paint job about 4 years ago and it still looks very good. I would like to say I have had one new vehicle in this life time though and the car is not only getting old but is soon up for repairs. I was shocked to know the amount of mark up there is on vehicles for you to be able to get 30 % WOW Good for you!!!

Every time I purchased a used car, I was conned up to the two eyes. I could have been killed once when the back axle broke and I went skidding across the road. Fortunately it was a Sunday and there was nothing coming in the opposite direction. Now I would only ever buy a new car. I trade it in every three years and I get a very good price, so I have very little to pay for the new car. I enquired about leasing but I felt this was a waste of money as it was like renting a house and I would never own the car.

Ok that's helpful to know I'm not just being silly but i thought the same thing about leasing. Then a little voice came in my head reminding me that if anything happened to the vehicle the repairs are taken care of and I was left not knowing which was the lesser of the two evils.

It depend on the situtation. If you had the money to make the payments for a new car and also be able to afford the insurance then I would probably buy a new vehicle.Because with a new one you dont have to deal with it breaking down or the parts going bad on it so soon like older cars do.But if you cannot afford a payment for a new one then I would say get a used one.I am going to get a 2005 Chrysler Town and Country minivan and the car dealership is going to give me a good deal on it.So mine and my husbands payments will be cheaper than if I bought a new one.I feel you cna find good used cars if you look around and dont rush.I almost rushed into buying another minivan that was a 02 and the same color only the 2002 minivan was a Dodge caravan. The dealership was asking a little higher price than the other dealership so I am glad I looked around.Used cars can require alot of upkeep but then it also depends on the year of the car.If say you got a 2004 the parts wouldnt proabbly go bad as soon versus buying a 2000 or lower which the car by then is getting older and therfore is going to be causing you alot of money to repair it .So by the time you fork out alot of money to keep fixing a car you probably would be ahead to have gotten a new car or a 3 year old car.I have a car now that when i got it,it was only 4 years old now it is 10 years old(1997)and it is costing us a arm and leg to repair it.That is whey we are going to get a newer used vehicle and just use it for if my husband goes to work or to go places near by.I know that you will have to replace tires every so many years and also get the oil changed, ect.But that is just minor necessary up keep .I am sorry my post is so long.Hopefully I have helped you out some. And goodluck on finding your car.keep us posted.

Don't be sorry, I enjoy reading my posts no matter how long they are. You were trying to be helpful. I would sure like to buy new as I have never had a new vehicle, but it won't happen till after I get my health in order. this is something coming soon and yet down the road, but it helps to keep my mind busy. I'm strictly a Buick person and they simply aren't cheap where I'm from. I'll definately do another post to let everyone know when I get my new vehicle.

Having had second hand cars for many years and the trouble that I had with them, I finally have what was a brand new car and is now 6 years old, buying it was a bit of a struggle but have never looked back! My one hiccup is that it is black and is always "dirty" lol If you have the chance to buy a new one it is well worth it as if something goes wrong it is mostly in the time it is still under warranty.

Hi Grandmaof2 I personally do not like new Cars I would go for a good second hand one But if you do decide on a new one then Lease it do not buy at least that way it is covered if anything goes wrong with it I get mobility because of my Disability and I could have had a lease car and a new one every 3 Years but I went for a second hand car as I prefer them to new Cars When I had a Company car everytime we got a new Car something went wrong with it. That has put me of brand new Cars

It is nice to have a brand new car. But if money is an issue, why not buy a fairly new car. Maybe one that is only 2 or 3 years old. A car looses a lot of value in the first 2 or 3 years. In my opinion, you might find a good deal with a slightly used car that doesn't have a lot of miles on it. And you can save some money over buying a new car. Then again, if you can afford it, you could probably lease a new car fairly cheap. The difference is that you will have an eternal car payment.

My next vehicle is going to be a certified used, and I will purchase the extended warranty with it. A friend of mine purchased one, it was 2 years old with 18K miles on it. It was 7K less the new price. She got a new car warranty with it and she purchased the extended warrarnty which was good for the next 100K for less then the price of a new vehicle. It looked like new.

If I was buying a new vehicle at your age, I would probably lease it since it is my first new vehicle purchase. I wouldn't get a good used car because you might be buying a vehicle that needs major repairs that you do not know of. I would lease a new one so you will have a warranty and you can also trade it back in later for something else. The only bad thing is if you keep doing that, you will always have a car payment. You could also buy a new car and still get the warranty. In a few years, you will have it paid for and it will still be like brand new to you. I have leased several vehicles and now I am buying one of them that I leased to begin with. If I ever go for another vehicle, I will lease one so I can trade it in for a newer model every few years or so. The engine will start to wear and tear and it is nice to know you will always have a warranty by leasing a new one.

In my opinion, if the financial is possible, I'd say go for a new one....it will save you alot in a long term. Leasing might sound money saver since if something goes wrong with the car, all you have to do just make a call and the company where you lease the car will fixed it for you. But in the end, you still have no car nor own a car. If you collect all the money for paying the lease, you can afford to buy a car for yourself. But if you just want to go for trip for a couple of day, lease a car will also be a good idea. Since last year, my husband and I decided to lease a car for a long trip/ vacation. And most of the time we got a nearly brand new car (maybe a month old) so we can just drive and less worried about the car condition.

I would look at my budget. Additionally, I would compare the price of the used vehicle with a brand new one I might get. These 2 factors would usually be quite deciding in themselves. I do know of people leasing Mercedes, claiming that it is cheaper this way. No ideas really, you have to do your own calculations. :P

I think that since you have never owned a new car that you should try and get a new one so that you can feel what it is like to have a brand new car that nobody has owned before. I think we all should get to experience a first new car but that may be difficult if you can not afford it. I prefer buying the car as I can say it is my own. If you were to get a used car, make sure you get a certified used car so that you know you are buying a used car that has been checked and worked on so it runs okay.

We are also thinking to buy a new car and we decided to go for used car. If you search a little you can buy nice used car in relatively good price. Our friends also say that used car is better than brand new one.

If I was planning to buy a new vehicle firstly I would take someone with me that was a mechanic to check out the car first. I would buy a good used car, I bought my car three years ago and my friends husband is a mechanic and he went along with me to test the car out before I bought my car.

I am 54, I am planning on buying a certifed used car. Never lease, you will pay a lot more in the long run. I have a special account, and will drive my car until it is beyond repair or I can pay for the new one cash. That is what I did with my current car.

That sounds like a pretty good idea. I still have my 94 Buick. It looks like a much newer car. It's in good shape and it gets me from point A to point B and besides with the gas going up all the time and we're paying 6.00 a gallon, I'm not so sure at my age (56) it would be a wise investment to buy a brand new car.

It's amazing to me that people are willing to pay so much money for something that loses most of it's value the instant you take it home. That being said - certified used is a good deal. Why does anyone need a new car? "Recycling" and buying a used car is better than it ending up in a junk yard somewhere. Older cars are broken in (yes, there actually is a legitimate breaking in period for an engine) as long as the used car has been inspected and certified, you aren't going to end up with a junker. save your money for investments - not liabilities and go used.

I see you started this discussion 3 months ago, are you any closer to obtaining that car of yours? I have had brand new cars, and went back to buying used cars that were only a few years old. I have had new cars that turned out to be lemons and had to get rid of them and used cars that have lasted well into the 150,000 mileage range. I would not lease a car for several reasons the biggest reason is this: if you do not keep up the maintenance schedule you are responsible for any damages that incur because you did not take the car in for it's regular "check-ups" or whatever is suppose to be done at whatever the mileage. Going to the dealer for regular maintenance is very very expensive now a days. The second reason as another poster stated, if you go over the mileage at the end of your lease, you have to pay so much a mile when you turn your car in. Finally, you MUST carry the higher liability and collision coverage on your car insurance.

Thank You so much for asking. I was really thinking about leasing but after reading all the comments from my good friends here at myLot that may not be my best deal. I think I need to look at some good used vehicles and buy it rather than lease. The reason I thought of leasing is because I don't have money and I thought if it broke down at least I could get it repaired at their cost. Now I'm not so sure if that is the good way to go. Just once in my life I would like a brand new vehicle I think we all think that way at least once. If I don't hurry up it'll be too late. I am already 56. I own a 94 Buick and it gets me from point A to point B. Thanks and Take Care...
