Have you dyed your hair, yourself?

Were you happy with the results? Or do you have a tale to tell? Last summer my boy wanted to put some sun into his hair. I suggested combing some peroxide through it to brighten up his highlights. Well, the discount store had some highlights on sale and he decided to go that route. He used the entire bottle, and left it on longer than suggested! oh my goodness! I really expected he would have waited for me to help him...but oh no!The result, to me, had his head looking like a dirty Q-Tip. Gross. But he loved it, and was sorry to have to shave it off when school started!

I do dye my hair myself as it is so much cheaper then going to the hairdresser and getting them to do it for me . I usually buy the dye and then have a friend put it in for me but years ago I used to use the stuff in the stores called Sun In and that ended up being a big mistake . I used this all the time as a child and the sun or heat would make your hair lighter and then as I got older I quit using it then one year I decied to try it again as I was getting outside more and knew it would lighten my hair much faster for me . Then one day I put some in and then went to blow dry my hair . When I was done I noticed my hair had a funny feel to it , it was like a really soft type of straw , it was incredibly soft feeling but not in a good way . When I tried to run a comb through my hair , chunks of my hair came out with it . I was in a panic and a friend of mine got a hold of a hairdresser who would be willing to go in on a Sunday and take a look at my hair as it was Sunday and no one was open on that day . It turned out it was the whole top part of my hair where the Sun In had touched my hair the most and all that had to be cut off . Underneath was fine but he had to cut off a bunch of my hair to find anything worth saving . It turned out that I had an allergic reaction to the dye and apparently this can happen at any time in our life and there are no signs of it happening til it does . I no longer use Sun In but do continue to dye my hair with different brands in the stores and just hope nothing like this ever happens again :)

oh wow! what a disaster. that must have been heartbreaking. I wonder if it is like the other poster mentioned how peroxide will break down the hair. I think that sun in is a peroxide solution.

hahahahaha when I read your story I was really giggling because I remember an incident like this with my twinsister... both of us have very long nice black hair.. then when dying of the hair came to a fad she got so interested of dying her hair too.. my parents did not allow her and with that she was not given any money for dying her hair... I am a Medical Technologist so I know a bit of chemical reactions... I learn that hydrogen peroxide would really change the color of the hair to a lighter result... I was just kidding around when I told her about it but i never thought that she would take it seriously....one day, I was wondering why she locked herself inside our bathroom.. only to find out later when she came out with hair blow dried hair, her hair is very light!! yellow??? or blond???.. hahaha it was really a moment to remember..

I always colour my hair myself, I've had it done once at the hairdressers and it was just too expensive. I've been doing it myself for about 10 years now, so am pretty practiced at it! I've been lucky enough to not have any disasters. My brother decided to peroxide his hair once, his hair is naturally quite dark and after a while he came in and asked me if it was supposed to be burning...I told him he had probably wash it out now...he hair went bright white! It acutally looked kinda cool but I don't think he's tried since then :)

Yes, I have many times. I've never had any kind of problems except the development of an allergic rash. I started out using the kind that washes out in about 6 washes. That was to determine what shade I should use without totally changing my hair color. Then, I started using the semi-permanent kinds. The only thing I did wrong in regards to color is that I did it too dark. But, it wasn't serious. I always made sure I followed the directions exactly and made sure I rinsed it out on time, if not early. I stopped coloring my hair a year ago when the allergy got so bad that I was itching all day long. I plan to color it again when the rest of the color gets cut off and the rash goes away.

My mom always dyes my hair for me. Every 5 or 6 weeks since 2002 she dyes it light auburn red. Its a beautiful color really red in the sun. Always keeps my hair light. I never liked having dark brown hair. Summer before my senior year of high school I bleached my hair with sunin. WAY too blonde. That sucked! It was actually white at one point. I think I should have just tried to dye it blonde not kill it. Took years to recover it. I love the red, I'd never stop. Now having my mom do it... thats another thing all together.

Yep. I've done it blonde, black, red, burgundy, and brown (other than my natural). I've done my own hair for a few years now. It's much cheaper and pretty much the same stuff as they use in the salon. I have always been happy with the results I've gotten. That's really extreme what your son did. He should have waited for you. Especially if he bought the cheap stuff. Since he's a boy he didn't need the whole bottle. Guess he thought he did. I don't think a dirty Q Tip looks good at all. But if he liked it. More power to him.

omg you suggested peroxide!! ewwww. I once did an intire science fair display at how peroxide eats your hair like bleach. dont believe me? Cut a SMALL peice frim under your hair and let it soak in a cap full of peroxide for a couple hours. notice it thinner, weaker, blablabla

lol, whoops! maybe that would have been better than looking like a dirty q-tip though? really, I thought that all lightening of hair was done by a bleaching process and not a dyeing. silly me. :)

I dye my hair all the time. But my hair is brown and I'm just dying it brown again to get the grey out. Never had a problem. Now my daughter who is ten has highlights and she loves them. I do them and I have had so many people comment on how nice her hair looks. I use herbal essence. They have two colours and they come with a plastic applicator. All you do is mix the stuff and it'll come out looking flourescent so you can see where you are putting them. You just put some of the stuff on the applicator and comb them in their hair. You can really see where they are going and to me it's really fool proof. After waiting about 1/2 an hour you wash it all out and it's done. Usually lasts her about 6 months or so but she has long hair.

Yes, I have used a temporary hair color on several occassionas for the last 3 years. When I first started coloring my hair I found the perfect shade. It literally looked like my hair. Soon after that they discontinued that color. I tried a different one and boy, was that a disaster! I am a redhead and red is a hard color to dye! I have since found another perfect one.

oh, I am glad you found an alternate dye. Don't you hate when you find something that works and suddenly it is not made anymore. I think they should disclose to us when something is going to be phased out so that we can stock up for a life time :)

I always dye my own hair... my first attempt actually went better than expected (although at the time I did not realize that it didn't really suit me) I dyed it blond when I was 18 due to the fact that my natural hair color has and will always make me look too pale (my skin is so pale that my summer tan is lighter than peoples winter fade) and it looked ok after all I was a little more tanned that year... but my second attempt was horrid I tried to dye it red on top of the blond so it came out orange and not a good orange (the color of pee and blood) then I dyed it black (other colors in between but not long enough to mention) and again I thought it looked good but I went over all my old pics and realized that I looked like a ghost) and not knowing it ended up having to bleach my hair to get the black out due to the fact that it is a very adhesive color... after that I tried red and low and behold it did look good! And it turns out that all different colors of the darker red look awesome on me and more natural.... so to sum up - brown (natural color), blond, and black make me look like a washed out ghost but red (any darker shade) look quite good on me

wow! you have gone the whole gambit! But, at least now you know what works and won't stray to far from that. IT is a good thing to know what works for you, and after all that experimenting you still have hair left to do it!

I have done this on my own to disastrous results and never will again. I had old blond streaks I wanted to cover so I figured I would get a darker brown and it would cover the streak and blend in with my normal light brown hair .Well when i lifted my head from the sink I was shocked to see I was coal jet black. I was crying and laughing all at once my best friends was there and she was saying maybe it will dry lighter and i hoped she was right. Now I must mention I did this to save a whopping 10 dollars. I dried it and i looked like a witch my hair was black it was so horrible. But what was worse was calling my stylist and telling her what I had done. I spent the next day at the salon for 5 hours getting my hair back to light brown and it cost 60 dollars. Never again Cheryl

I have always dyed my own hair, until...I wanted it a dark red so i went to the store bought the kit, and when it was all said and done my hair was purple. I waited about two weeks thought I'd just buy myslef a frost and tip kit and turn it blonde, I got a brand new head of hunter orange hair. I am not joking it was sick looking. I ended up going to a professional and they got it blonde for me and I'm still having to go get the blonde cut out every three months. Needless to say I haven't had my hair dyed since. I've learned to live with my natural red hair.

Oh my yes! One time I wanted to put highlights on my hair, i followed the directions to the T and when I was done I was in tears! My hair turned YELLOW...not blond...YELLOW like the crayon color yellow! I had to go to the beauty shop to have a professional get it 1/2 way back to normal. Needless to say, I don't try to dye my hair anymore!

I always dye my own hair , I am one of those people that just cant afford to go get it done by a professional. I had once that it turned the prettiest pink color , while going from burgundy to blonde . I havent ever been able to get that color again and everyone loved it .

I did dye my hair a couple of times when I was younger. I had the time to do it then along with changing nail polish every after how many days. I find it expensive to have it done in a salon and I got great results by doing it myself, so I never went to a salon for that again. One just have to be really careful and must read the instruction, so as not to cause hair damage. But once you get used to it, you become an expert! :)

Yeah, I've dyed my hair several times. Almost two times a year, casue I have white hair, though I'm young, only 24. The white hair bother me very much. I don't know why I have white hair. So I have to resort to the dye. Mostly, I dye my hair in hair store, that may work better. Last time when I dyed my hair, I was at home. So, I asked my elder sister to help me. Wow, the result turned to be very good. I like it.

Yes, I have dyed my hair myself several times. I prefer to have a salon do it, because they are better at it, but when I did it, it turned out pretty good. I did my own recently with a product that came with a glazing cream and my hair is so shiny. My hair is normally dull and lifeless, but now it is just lifeless and shiny. LOL! But I tend to want to have a salon do it. It is just so expensive!

Never, I don't think its worth the trouble really. Just go to the local hair dresser to do it, it doesn't cost that really when you think about how long it the process takes and also they are more experience, meaning that errors are not likely to occur. After all, this you hair getting dyed so a little mistake could mean that part of hair will be different shades in color. The cost is worth if when you consider the fact that if you want to keep your hair to that new color, it will be a while before you need to dye it again. Or the second option is to get someone else to do it for, just don't do it yourself, you are bound to miss some spots :)
