RAM limit? how can i know how much more RAM chips i can add?

i have 1gig (two 512mb chips) and a 3ghz intel pentium D plus an nvidia geforce7600/256mb video card.
iam planning on boosting my RAM to 2 gigabytes.will it make the pc run smoothly??? i have 250gb...
