During a disaster women and children are saved first .Why?

i think its some outmoded view of chivalry. The idea that women, just like children have to be protected, that they are too weak to be able to look after themselves. Its quite insulting really blessed be

At one time women were considered the only way a tribe could continue because she gave birth to the children of the tribe, Any man can start a child but only certain women of child baring age can have a child. A tribe could easily survive if it consisted of 10 women and 2 men, where as 10 men and two woman the chance of that tribe surviving were small. As well the children were important as they were the next generation that would carry on the tribe. I think the idea of women as being less than was never considered, If you read you history the woman were the ones who did every thing except hunt down and kill the food and even then some were allowed to. In those days the survival of the tribe, was paramount and steps were taken to see to that and that is why women and children first came about.

Men have been known to be physically strong and more muscularly built so they would usually be known as 'protectors'. This is why women and children would usually be the ones to be saved first because it's been known that men should protect them (just like protecting their families) and that men could save themselves with their brawn. Another reason is that women tend to worry or panic because of tendency for emotional outbursts (which could also be hormonal) and that children are the future of the world, so they need all the protection that they could get. Everybody loves the little angels and no one wants to see them suffer.So,saving the babies first is understandable and it's believed that women understand kids better than men do,being their mothers.So,that could be one of the reasons for turning our attention to women first. The second of course is that men can't survive without women.So,even if men survive but women don't ,then men will eventually die,lol.Thus,save the women and then save themsleves,lol.Nah..men are considered sturty and anatomically more capable of defending themselves when compared to women,though this view is changing with time.So,protecting women becomes a priority as men could always get out of there after the babies and the women are safe.

I think it is the way men are raised. They are raised to be protecters. I also think a men are afraid of having to raise the children...I mean I had to work a 24hr shift so my boyfriend had to watch the baby....NOT he stayed at my work with the kids the whole night so that I could do it(yes I know that there are single daddys raising their children) I have noticed their are a lot of old fashion men out there that feel a womens place is home with the kids and a mans place is to protect and provide for them. So this is probly why the save women and children first...but I think it should be reworded to "Children firstand then anyone that can not make it with out help" because if you think about it What if there was a man in a wheelechair? if every one only helps women and children then them selves who will help that man? I feel that if a woman is capible then she should be helping resque the people that need help. I feel that EVERYONE should get a chance not just the women...However, the children come first.

hmmm.. because women and children's lives our more important than men's life?? lol because children are only given a lesser time to live than men?? because women are in capable of giving birth so we need more women to continue human reproduction?? lol am i right??.. ;-P

I like RobinJ's simple but truthful response. However, there are people out there who will definitely disagree because of lack of knowledge. Did you know that women have always ruled the world (even in those eras when women are alleged to have had no say about matters). Oh, yeah! Well, let me give you some few examples of our always matriarch world: Biblical characters - Eve, Sarah, Racheal, Rebecca, prophetess Deborah, Queen of Sheba, Queen Esther, wives of king Solomon Current - My mothers, Nancy Reagan, Barbara Bush, Hillary Clinton, etc.

well i have thought about this before, but one thing only came to mind, because women and children needs to be taken cared of and not like men who can generally run faster than children and women. :)

I'm sure this might have been said already but i think it's because traditionally, culturally and naturally the child is the most important member of the family. Then to the child the mother is the most important - as the nurturer.
