Changing Avatars, I am so frustrated

I have been trying to change my Avatar, for the past 24 hours and I keep getting that green universal one I download the picture and it even show on my page and as soon as I go to a discussion I get the green thing again, What am I doing wrong. PLEASE HELP Regards Robin I went back in to discussions and got the information from the first time but now it doesn't work the same way
