Leaving a dog alone all day

Leaving A dog Alone All day - This is a discussion topic for the Ask the Experts Q&A below. Do you think its fair to leave a dog alone all day while the family is at school/work? Do you have a dog sitter instead? Or do you have a friendly neighbor who calls in to check on him and walk him during the day?

Yes its very unfair and selfish. I am onnly gone for 4-5 hours monday-thurs. I am home all day Friday, Sat, and Sunday so my dog is only in a pen from 10-3 at the most! He is a very hyper dog (hes a terrier) so he would get depressed and destructive if I made him stay in there any longer! Also dogs are proven to have behavioral problems if they are confined to a cage for too long.

I think if you don't have anytime for the dog, you shouldn't own one. A dog is a serious responsibility.

if i want to leave my dog i always make it a point that there is enough food left for him and ask my neighbor to check him out once in a while

we are used to leaving the dog alone if we have things to do and most of us will be out. the dog will be left with a food and a water for the day. :) he just looks so excited as soon as everyone is coming right back.

The length of time that a dog can be left alone is often related to its age. There is a rescue/shelter not far from us that places dogs that have been brought to them. In the case of puppies, they will specifically tell people that they can never be left alone for more than 3 hours at a time. For that reason, if someone wants to adopt the dog but the family is gone for the entire day, they won't place a young pup with them. They have really stringent rules there, including an application process where potential adoptive families have to provide references, fill out documentation and also pay $250 for any dog. Their policy is that they try to place all of their dogs in "forever homes."

I dont think it is fair to leave a dog locked up in a house or backyard all day on his own. We used to have a dog but my mam didnt work so she was at home with him most of the time. We hated leaving him on his own for even 10/15mins if we had to go to the shop or something. I also dont think its fair for someone to get a dog if they dont have the space such as they live in a flat/apartment or with a very small back. A dog needs space to run around, go to the toilet etc. They need a reasonable size backyard.

yes i agree with you but we have to change our location time to time on the other hand our doggy is the best so we must have to manage with space and doggy complexity. thanks for response

I am of the openion that if you dont have time to give to your dogs or pets then why to lock them in house, rather we can set them free to live in their own environment.Dogs are also living creatures and they also have emotions and feelings, and I think we should respect their feelings also.Dogs when they live with human require someone with them always. So we should have some person at home if we have pet.

Dog - A dog sitting at home, what a cutey!
I dog doesnt like being left alone all day. They get lonely, and may tear stuff up and vanadlize the house out of boredom and nervousness. My family has always had more than one dog so we don't have that issue because they have eachother as company. But dogs generally dont like being alone because they are such a social species.
