Does music affect our personality?

How often do your parents tell you not to listen to rock or rap music? Most of the time is because they think that the way the singers reffer to people in their lyrics, is the way your going to think about people, mostly, they think of what you're going to think about them. They also think that if you watch their music videos, your are going to start dressing and acting like them. Have your parents told you not to listen to a music you like very much, leave me a comment on why you think your parents tell you not to listen to that kind of music. Thx.

I'm one of the parent, but I grew up listening to rock and punk music. My dad more then my mom would question my music choices, but then he had particular tastes in music. My dad used to ask why I would watch the radio on tv ... ;). I listen and actually get music for my kids to listen to, so I do get a say in what they listen to. I try to make sure that their music is age appropriate (I have 12 year old twins) so they aren't listening to music that they aren't psychologically prepared to listen to. Children especially have been shown to be very easily influenced from many studies done with children watching tv, and commercials, so until they can process certain things I feel that their viewing and listening choices should be, if not censored, at least watched. They also need to be included and talked to about situations that they experience.

I just noticed your title again and here is the part of the response I forgot. I think a lot of music we listen to comes from the environment we live in and listen to it from, so it may not affect our personality but be a product of our personality and environment.
