Before you answer, let me tell you why I ask. This morning, I was thinking about a short story I read about a million years ago. It's called "The Lottery" and written by Shirley Jackson. It was originally printed in the New Yorker in July of 1948. Here is Wikpedia's synopisis of the story... "The story contrasts commonplace details of contemporary life with the barbarism of the ritualistic lottery. The setting is a small American town (pop. 300) where the locals display a celebratory mood as they gather on June 27 for their annual lottery. After a person from each family draws a small piece of paper, one slip with a black spot indicates the Hutchinson family has been chosen. When each member of that family draws again to narrow the selection, the family's mother, Tessie Hutchinson, is the final choice. She is then stoned by everyone present, including her own family. The reader, though, does not know the true situation until the first stone strikes Tessie Hutchinson, although the tone becomes darker as her fate draws nearer and nearer." So, let me ask you the question... Do you want to win this lottery???

What the freak is this?!!! I almost wanted to shout out I WANT, good thing I didn't. Why do people want to stone that poor lady? And the family members too!! What a horrific story!!

It is a horror story. It started a lot of controversy in the late 40's as people didn't seem to believe that the human race could be that evil. Well, look at Hitler, Sadaam Hussein, etc. Unfortunately, Life does work this way. :) By the way, you lose, here's your +. :)

Wow. Ok, I realize this is a really super old post but how creepy! I added you as a friend, I met you originally over at yuwie but I have not been over there in a long while. This is much more my speed! As far as this question, NO, I would not want to win the lottery. I'd have to know all the specifics BEFORE I got involved. I would not be able to believe that people would be okay with something like this. It makes me think that people - at least some people - must be inherently evil.

Nice to meet you again, Mommyboo! It is scary how evil people can be. Can you imagine the feelings of people when this story first came out? I remember how outraged we were in High school when we read this story.

I saw the movie, I think it was a made for TV movie and I can't think who the stars were right now but I found it very, very dark and disturbing! I especially remember when her daughter is forced to throw a huge stone at her. It just totally creeped me out! Annie
