About 6 months ago my BF and I started making calzones

calzone - They are Yunmmy!

(about once a month) at home. They are very simple to make for those of you who have never tried it. I use the pizza dough that comes in a bag already made up. I know some of you true Italians may frown on this but I just can't get my dough to turn out right. I mix ricotta and mozzarella cheese along with pepperoni and sausage in a bowl. I never measure anything just eyeball it (see recipe link below for those who don't want to eyeball it LOL). I also add one raw egg. Mix well and then roll out the pizza dough. Put it on a greased pizza pan or baking sheet. Add the filling to one side of the dough and fold over the other side. Wet my fingers and crimp the edges together(with fingers) Cut 3 small slits in the top and bake at for 15 minuets. We also make our own pizzas. It's fun to do together especially with kids. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calzone http://recipes.bhg.com/recipes/recipedetail.jsp?recipeId=38447

I LOVE making calzones and I make them quite often because my boyfriend LOVES eating them. The coolest thing is that there is no limit as to what you can put into them. I have made some with cut up ham, spinach, and cheese....or chiken, peppers and cheese....actually cheese always seems to find it's way in. This versatility makes calzones a great way to use up leftovers and I do that often with them too. I'm italian and I use pre-made dough from the supermarket. Don't feel bad about that at all! It makes the process so much easier, and then I can keep bags of dough in the freezer to have on hand. Already made ones also freeze quite well in my experience, so that adds to the convienence.

Heehee! My mom just started using those noodles that you don't have to cook. I think they were fine. Making your own noodles is a ton of work! I support cooking shortcuts :-)

I agree it is a great way to use up leftovers. I love all toppings but usually we only make one because they are so big and filling and my BF and I split it. And he's picky picky LOL? Oh and BTW way the only reason why i said that Italians would frown on it is because I made lasagna a few months back when she and her BF were visiting and I used those noodles that you don't have to boil...and her BF said My family would not ever use those! A real Italian makes there own noodles. LOL! I would not even attempt to make my own noodles! Thanks for responding!

Pizza is one of my favorite things, so anything similar to it should be good too. I never thought about making my own calzones but your way seems to be pretty easy. I will probably use the pizza dough that is already made up too.lol.

I've never tried to make these before but my hubby loves them. I will have to try to make them here in the near future when he's home. I do make homemade pizzas which is way better than store bought ones. My daughter loves them too cause she gets to pick the toppings that she gets to put on them.

Thanks for sharing a really easy recipe. I was wondering where you get the pizza dough from. Do you go to a pizza parlor to get it or do you buy it in the grocery store? I have a real simple recipe for quesadilla. I use the soft tortillas that come flat that you can buy in the grocery store. I used cut up grilled chicken that has been seasoned with chilli powder, salt, pepper and cilantro. I use the shredded Mexican cheese from the grocery store. I heat up a skillet with a little sprayed oil and place the tortilla in the pan. I fill up one side with cheese and chicken and fold over the tortilla and press the edges together with a spatula until the melted cheese seals the edges. Flip over and brown on the other side and serve with a dollop of sour cream.

Thanks for sharing the recipe. Don't worry about the whole dough thing Sj, its a bit of a task to get right even with some experience. There are times I cut slits in the calzone and other times I do not. The times I do cut the slits are when I barely cooked (or didn't cook) some of the meat ingredients, or I do it to help with the slicing later on. As for the egg, I sometimes do that for glaze, other times I use olive oil.
