Reading between the lines...

Have you ever tried talking to a person and truly listened to what they are saying? Not the exact words but the meaning behind those words. A person may say while walking on the sidewalk..."What a beautiful house!" but he truly meant..."I will have a house like that someday." An elderly may say..."My kids are all grown up and successful." but what he really wanted to say is..."I miss them so much. I wish they will have the time to visit me." A man may say..."I do not need a woman in my life." but in his heart what he meant is..."I need just one woman but she may not feel the same way." A woman with her friend may seem to be chattering and talking cheerfully but when you look closer, there is sadness in her eyes. Each meaning varies from person to person depending on every circumstance. I have tried this often...tried to understand the meaning behind the words without presumption and judgment...simply understanding...and surprisingly, it is a learning experience.

I am in insurance sales, and believe it is part of my job to "read between the lines" when having a conversation. Reading your post reminded me of something my mom(and probably a million others) used to say..."It's not WHAT you say, it's HOW you say it." You're right, it is a learning experience when you take the time to listen to what people are saying, unfortunately not enough people do it.
