Maybe you have worm on your computer.. you have to eliminate the shutdown proccess with type "shutdown -r" in your dos prompt. then scan it for viruses or worm. i sugested you to using norton antivirus.

It is difficult to assess a problem without actually seeing it, bit it would be of help if you could supply a little more information. I feel that your problem is more likely a hardware problem than a virus. For a virus to cause a shutdown I would expect it to occur much sooner. You say that the computer restarts after 30 minutes, but you did not say whether it runs fine after the restart. This is more likely due to overheating, which would take time to develop once the computer is switched on. In most cases of overheating your computer would end up in a rapid cycle of restarts because as soon as the computer shuts down it cannot detect the problem and reboots, but as soon as Windows starts to engage it will detect the problem and shut down again. This could be caused by almost any piece of hardware. If a component is defective it could draw too much power from the Power Supply Unit and cause it to crowbar.

Hmmm, could be a virus. But it could also be a hardware problem. If you know how to disassemble your pc, do it. Then put them back again, one by one, to know which one causes the problem.

cpu fan - it is used to cool down the processor!!
A VIRUS MIGHT NOT BE THE ONLY REASON FOR THAT!! IT IS POSSIBLE IF YOUR CPU FAN HAS LOT OF DUST IN IT AND THE AIR IS NOT CIRCULATING OR COOLING THE CPU(CHIP) PROPERLY..!!I RECOMMEND YOU TO OPEN UP THE CABINET AND CLEAN ALL THE DUST IN THE CPU FAN..ACTUALLY A FRIEND OF MINE HAD THE SIMILAR PROBLEM WHOSE PC TURNED OF EVERY 20 MINS..HE DOES THE SAMETHING I TOLD U AND HIS PC IS WORKING PERFECTLY NOW!!AND IF UR LOOKING FOR ANY GOOD ANTIVIRUS TRY NOD32..ITS THE BEST OF ALL!!! BEST OF LUCK!!!

apnagopal from your name i guess u are indian... i dont think there is any virus in ur pc.. 1st thing when u say 30 mins, is it an approx timing or have u counted it? i think ur processor is heating up and giving u problems and hence is restarting ur pc.. Open ur pc and blow away all the dust that might be present inside the cabinet... if possible remove the cpu fan and replace the heatsink compound and then try to use ur pc... i am sure it will solve ur problem... 2nd thing is check if ur smps fan is working.. if that is not working ur smps will get overheated and will restart ur pc as it will malfunction...

all i can say is every1 on the internet will keep saying that their antivirus is the best.... there are almost no exceptions . but i've used norton after which i used kaspersky and after which i went on to avast... and by far avast is the best. its fast *doesn't eat up ram..hence doesn't slow yer comp down *updates are regular and tiny...so its easy to download and u always stay protected. u use it n u'll know get it from www.avast.com btw i've seen a lot of other softies like avira mcafee in internet cafes and they slow the sytem severely down with offering total protection. if even after installing avast and running a boot time scanthe problem persists then it means that the damage to your os is irreparable and the only way out would be to format c drive n reinstall xp
