In october we took in a stray cat, or shall I say she ran into the house and refused to leave. She was so skinny her bones were showing and she was full of burrs and definitely abandoned. That is quite common around where I live. We have three other cats and didn't have the heart to throw her out. Zarrah is the newest member of our family. Right now she still refuses to go out even though my other three go out during the day. Zarrah is such a delightful cat, so play and talkative .She sings when music is on, she talks to us when we talk, and now she is driving us crazy. She won't shut up. She is in heat and we are going to have to get her spayed. My son wants me to hold off a big longer, so that we know that decent money is coming into the house, from my writing etc. would you take a stray cat in and adopt her? would you get her spayed? would you wait until finances are a bit better before getting her spayed?

I took in a stray cat about 5 years ago and now she is part of my family. I didnt have to have her spayed she already was. She was so thin like yours when I found her. But not today she now has some weight on her.LOL I think they make the best cats. And I would get her spayed.

I don't have room for another cat. There are two here now, but they don't go outside. I would be sure to have enough income before getting the cat fixed. I think I would keep her in the house if she is in heat. As long as you are taking in abandoned cats, they are probably 11 million around that need assistance...lol. Zarrah is probably just happy to have someone care for her. If she sings well enough, put her on American Idol...she couldn't do any worse than some of them.

My nan had a stray cat that would come along for food when he was hungry. My nan called him Diner, for obvious reasons and she grew very attached to him. However, my grandfather would not adopt him so my nan had to do her best to look after him by making a shelter for him in her garden. Then new neighbours moved in next to my nan and they adopted Diner as their own. He lived a good life with them. It was only discovered a little while ago that a neighbour further down the road actually was Diners owner, but as she had never taken care of him, my nans neighbours carried on as usual. Then one day Diner did not come home for food and he went missing for a few days. They found out that his real owner had taken him to a vet and had him put down. This devastated my nan and her neighbours. How could this woman have been so cruel. Soon after that she moved away and it was good riddance to her, but I don't think my nan has ever got over it or her neighbours. Some people are just nasty. Its good to know there are people like you winterose and my dear nan who will look after strays. You are a star!!

oh that is awful that they would do that, I think they lost their rights as owners the minute the new people took the cat in.

I remembered when I was about 7 years old, my mother found two stray kittens near our doorstep. We named them Maui and Tiger. Everyone in the house were delighted. As the days passed, I discovered that my legs are getting a lot of rashes and it was so itchy. The rashes kept spreading until it covered both my legs. I was crying days and nights because the itchiness was unbearable. My mother brought me to the doctor and discovered I was allergic to cat. My mother had no choice but to let go of the kittens.

You'll definitely want to take her tho the vet, at least to be checked out. I took in a female years ago, who turned out to have already been fixed. It appeared that she once had kittens, and that she had been fixed right afterwards. Do you never know - have her examined! Oh, and get it done before you end up with a litter that you'll have to take care of, too! ;) PS: I love my female. She's the only girl in a household of five cats, and she's the most loving, vocal, and attentive cat that I have ever had.

she is definitely in heat I have had cats all my life, all my cats are fixed, so that there is no problem with her having kittens, she doesn't want to go out. We have had her since october, she was checked when we first got her, she was very then but not starving, the vet estimated that she may have been on the street for a week to 12 days max.

Yes I would and I have on a few occasions I will not see any Animal out on the Street if I can help it Yes I would get the Medical Attention for it but of course the Finances have to be there to do it as the Vets here will do no treatment without Money

If i wasn't allergic to cats, i'd definately take a stray cat in, but would have it examined by the vet right away, especially if i had other pets. As to getting them neutered, if it really bothered me that much, i'd do it right away, if not i'd wait for a little more cash.

I know this isn't the same kind of Stray Cats, but I gotta love 'em and I get to see them live for the first time ever in my life this coming August. They will be touring with Styx and ZZTop. Can't wait! PS: I actually have had only 3 cats in my life, and all were strays taken in from the street. Princess, Mittens, and Puddin.

Sure, I'd look after the cat yeah, if the poor thing needed spayed then I would. I'd just do it if it was needed and worry later, but I think I would manage. ~Joey

I would definitely not take the stray cat in, given that you already said the cat was in bad shape, you had no idea really if that cat was sick and obviously you care about your own cats and I wouldn't want to subject my animals to that. I would have taken the cat to the S.P.C.A. If finances are pending I agree with your son. I'd be wondering if after the cat is spayed someone could try to say it was theirs, I've actually heard of this happening. It is important that this cat be spayed but I think not at your expense. This is just my opinion of course.

We have a place that spays for about $25, plus, if she hasn't had a rabies shot - $7. Not bad Take in stray cats - your talking to the gal who picked up a little black cat on Halloween & then took in 7 more cats since Thanksgiving.

I too took in a cat in October. Her name is Shadoe. She followed me home from the grocery store one afternoon (hence the name) and pretty much hasn't left since. Except for the one night she got out and got pregnant. She was so tiny when she first came in, I thought she was about 4 or 5 months and that I would have time to come up with some money to get her fixed. Too late. LOL She had her adorable babies in January. I ended up getting stuck with two of the babies because I didn't have enough people to take the kittens. So not only did I get one new cat but I actually got three. So there is Shadoe and the babies are Socks and Button. Socks is a male (and the girls in my home aren't fixed-yet) so he goes on the 29th for his shots and then in two more weeks (my paydays) he will be neutered. His mother is next on the list, she hasn't tried to get out since she got pregnant so I just have to keep a close eye on her. So I have a family of six kitties. To answer your other questions: Would I get her spayed? Yes Would I wait until finances are a bit better? Yes, only if I thought I could keep her from going outside. :) mahmah

Well all five of my cats are strays that I took in - so the answer to your first question is yes! As to the second question - I would definately get her spayed, and the sooner the better. If she is in heat her instincts will soon take over and she will try and get out to find a mate, so then before you know it, she will come back pregnant, and you will have the expense of not just one cat but a whole family of them! I don't know where you live, but here in the UK, there are charities that will spay a cat for free. Good luck!

We've been taking in stray cats since I was a kid. My mom was such a cat lover, and all of ours, were strays at one time. We had many litters of kittens too, and were able to find good homes for them. Back then, it didn't seem like a lot of folks got them spayed or neutered. Our cat Anna Belle (pictured in my Avatar) came from a Cat Rescue. This place finds 'foster families' for them, and then homes are found. Anna Belle had been abandoned on the street, and was pregnant at the time. The foster family had both her, and her kittens. When we adopted her, I had to sign papers to agree to certain terms. One was to have her spayed, and we were able to use the Cat Rescue's vet. I had to pay a fee to get her (can't remember what it was now), as she's going on eleven. Part of this 'very reasonable fee,' as I remember, included having her spayed. I strongly believe that giving homes to strays is a very good cause. Thanks for the great topic.:)

Yes, I take in lots of strays, and I do get them spayed and neutered. It costs alot, but it is so much cheaper if you do it right away, before she gets pregnant and you have more to fix. lol Congratulations on your new baby, and I'm so glad you adopted her. Take care.
