How do you make up your grocery list?

When going to the grocery store, do you first make a list? If so, how do you make it? Do you keep track of what you need all week long and then add to it what you want before you go? I have been doing on-line diets now for a while and I love that I can print out their shopping list and use that! I barely have to think, and I know I'll have enough of everthing I need during the week. I do add some things sometimes, but mostly I go by what's on the list for my meals during the week.

I start my grocery list for the following week the day after I do grocerys. I keep a list on the counter and as we run out of things, we add to the list. This way when I go, I always know if I need soap, shampoo and that kind of stuff. Then when it is time to go shopping, I make a menu for the week. I go threw the menu and finish the list with things needed to make the meals for the week. If I go to the store alone, I usually will stick right to the list. If hubby or kids come with, watch out! They love to pick up the extras.

Oh, I only buy food at the grocery store - I buy the household stuff once a month through the internet (saves money). I always stick to my list too!!! I remember sometimes when I'd see something I wanted on impulse - peanut butter cups or something - I'd add it to the list real quick so I could buy it!!!

that was funny and you're cheating on you list! lol well sometimes its really hard to resist impulsive buying. sometimes, i make an allowance for items that are really not on list. but i always try hard to convince myself against buying unpractical or unhealthy items. its not really the list that i stick to, its the budget. ;)

That's the main reason I have the list - to stick to the budget... But sometimes you gotta stray... So, I would add it so I felt "better" about it. I wasn't really cheating if it was on the list :)

I usually look around the house to figure out what I have left after cooking for the week. Depending on what I want to cook the next week , I will buy according to that also.

It's nice to know that others plan their meals before shopping also. I would go nuts if I didn't know what I needed to buy for something. It just seems to take the pressure off of the whole shopping thing.

Exactly... of course if I don't plan it out, I wont have the right stuff to even make a badly balanced meal... I think we all just have too much stuff going on in life any more to be able to keep it all straight.

It only makes sense because if you just make a list of a whole lot of things you might not have what it needs to make a well balanced meal.

I take a piece of paper and a pencil. that's how I make my list ;-) No seriously : there is allways a paper on the fridge, and whenever someone takes out the last item, e.g. egg, butter, milk, lettice, ... he/she writes it up so once a week we can fill up what's needed !

Well rate for a best answer then... ;-) No, the only thing they never filled up in the list was Brussels Sprouts... Damn, just what I like the most!

Oh, that's too funny!!! Wish I could give you 2 +'s for that one!! Since my list is on the internet, I put it into excel and just delete the things I don't need for the week (salt, pepper, whatever I already have). Then I sort it by category, print it out and take it with me. I'm glad your family is disciplined enough for that. When my kids were at home, we did that too - but sometimes things didn't get written down. If I was in a hurry and didn't recheck the fridge and cupboards before I dashed off to the store, I'd have to go back and get the things that were left off.

I have typed out a complete list of things that I usually buy, categorized as Freezer Section, Vegetables/Fruits/Juices Section, Breads/Pastries/Canned Goods Section and Miscellaneous. I print out many copies of the list and get one before I go out to shop, just tick out the items I've run out of. Then off I go.

Hi,reindawn!! I will make up my grocery list before I go to the grocery store.I will write down all the items I need for the whole week on my list before I go.Generally speaking, the items on my list are often food and aritcles of everyday use such as packs of tissues, shampoo or other items.

We keep a white board in the kitchen and when you open the last bottle of ketchup you write it on the board to be replaced or the last bottle of laundry soap. This way we never run out of something. This works very well and once everyone is "trained" to this system of keeping the list you thing run smoothly. You don't wait until you run out. It must be when the last bottle is opened. This gives plenty of time to go to the store and to even wait for a sale sometimes.

That's good planning also. Not waiting for something to be gone totally, but when it's down to the last one.

First i decide on what day i go shopping, then right before i go through all the drawers and such and write a list and about how much the things might cost me. That way i know pretty much around how much to take or spend, and then i added it up with the rest of the bills and see if i can afford it, and then i go shopping!

The first thing I do is go through my fridge, freezer and pantry. Then I plan my menu based on what is there. Then I make my grocery list to fill out the two weeks. I also check our staples to see if they need to refilled. Like rice, beans, potatoes, ketchup, mayo, etc. There are some items I buy no matter what like bread, milk, slice cheese and cream cheese. So they are always on my list. I type everything up on the computer, then print it out and we are good to go. As for non-food items, I have a separate list. It never changes and we buy the same items every two weeks. I almost have that one committed to memory.

Every two weeks? I don't know that I could think that far ahead. I'd be afraid something would go bad...

As soon as we use something up here we put it on a list that I keep on the fridge that way everyone can add to it if they need something and nothing is forgotten. The day we go shopping is the day we plan the menu for the week. Right now I can't go shopping b/c I can't make it without being in alot of pain 9mos pregnant. I can't wait to be able to go shopping again. Maybe even leave the kids with hubby while I go woohoo. lol

I usually visualise myself walking down the aisles and make my list by whatI am going to run into first. If it is getting close to shopping day I jot that stuff I need down in advance, but usually I just make it all at once the night before I go. It's pretty easy anyway because much of the purchases are the same week after week and I could nearly do it in my sleep.

Yeah, most of mine is the same too - creatures of habit I guess... And the shopping is so much easier if it's organized by the aisles in the store!

It sounds like you don't normally do the grocery shopping but you do try to help out with it. It is hard to buy the groceries when you are not the one that normally prepares the food. My husband's list would be different than mine also!

Yeah, with so much going on in our lives now-a-days, my memory is pretty much shot also. If it's not written down, it's as good as forgotten.

we do, as much as possible, try to make a list, but these are the things that are really necessary to have, you know - toilet paper, bath soap, toothpaste, sugar, salt, eggs, bread, rice (in our case but not always for others), laundry detergent, dishwashing soap, etc. other grocery items, we usually play it by ear and grab as we go through the store - certain meat or meat products, veggies, etc, depending on the need or what meals we have planned for the week or depending on the mood - what we feel like buying, etc.

I set down and create a 7 day menu, then make a list from that. Through out the week we have a list on the fridge were as we notice things we need or are running low on we can write them on there. I finish my list by checking that. I shop on Monday mornings as well so everyone knows where I am on that day and not to bother asking me to do favors, LOL.

I have the list all in my head so I don't even write it down anymore. You mention online diets though. I did Weight Watchers online and I did print on their menus when I was doing that plan for a while and it made it very easy for me to shop.

I wasn't sure if weight-watchers did that also. I've never done weight-watchers at all. That's good to know! Usually with those sites, you know you should be getting a balanced diet.

When I notice we are almost out of something, I write it down, leave the paper laying on the kitchen table, and we add to it as we start to run out of stuff. Then when I'm going to be in the neighborhood of the grocery store I take my list with me. I found by not buying according to what we need, I tend to pick up stuff that just sits in the cupboard or frig and never gets eaten. I hate wasting anything, especially food and money.
