Well, our county property tax bill came Saturday. My hubby and I were actually excited about it, until we opened it. We purchased our house in September and the taxes for 2005 had been $3400. Not too bad, could be worse we thought. Well our property taxes went up to a whopping $4194! $2300 of it was the local school district, now I know why people complain about the quality of education, or lack of it I should say. We're fortunate enough to have the money in our savings, but it looks like we're gonna have to start saving now to pay next years. All of a sudden homeownership isn't all that grand. What are your taxes like?

The danish system dosen't work like that at all. Do you americans only pay property tax once a year? That must ve very annoying, then you have to save up for it all year!?

We geta property tax bill here in Illinois once a year and you can split it up into two payments due in June and September. I thinnk there are other states that don't even have property tax. How does the danish system work?

Our property taxes are about $4800. And I send my kids to private school! I wish we'd get some sort of rebate on the school taxes, since we don't use the school system. We have our taxes come directly out of our escrow account, so while I do see the bill I don't have to write out that check. That would be painful.

You should be receiving a tax credit for sending your kids to private school, although I think it's through the state. I'm not to sure about federal but I think you only get a tax break for private colleges and universities. Check into your state law about this, I coulda swore my inlaws got a tax credit for my SIL's private elementary school education.

I am glad that I signed up this year to get my taxes reduced. I just found out that seniors get a good reduction on school taxes as they dont have school aged children. I also had never checked into Homesteaders exemption and I get double that as well for being a senior. Am I ever glad!!!

Our taxes are over $5000. We pay for the community college, the school districts and about 8 different pensions for various city employee's. We don't have any children. I do understand the payments for the schools, as it keeps the kids off the streets and out of trouble while they attend school. Hopefully, they are also getting a decent education. Since we pay for the city employee's pension's, I never hesitate to call the city when I don't like the way the city property behind my home is not tended to properly. They always comply and send the workers out to mow and weed whack along my fence. Makes me feel like I at least get my money's worth! PEACE

Everywhere property taxes are going up! It is almost not worth owning a house anymore! With all of the insurances and taxes you are paying it makes you feel like you don't own it! My parents taxes are actually still pretty decent, but they don't live in a prestigious neighborhood or even a nicer one. They live in what is now a lower income neighborhood, their house is paid off and they are on a fixed income. Florida keeps raising their taxes and insurances to the point it is skyrocketing by the year. I am worried they will no longer be able to afford the expenses even with the house paid off! My girlfriend lives in a very nice neighborhood, her property taxes are up to $5600 this year! It is outrageous! She is selling her house and buying a townhome because she can't afford the maintenance and upkeep and insurance and taxes on it any longer. It is very sad!

That really sucks!! Our property tax is paid through our mortgage loans so we don't have to worry about it, we just make our house payment and they pay the property tax for us. I guess we are lucky and don't get any unwelcomed surprises like ya'll did.
