Parents of girls, will you have your girls get the new HPV shot?

The new HPV shot supposedly prevents the HPV virus which causes a certain type of cervical cancer. This shot is technically still under testing and has been released in many areas, my own included. I have some real mixed emotions about these new drugs. I've seen so many recalls or sudden changes in how "safe" things are that seem to quickly come to the market for use, while other things take years upon years to get approved. Do you think it's safe? Are you going to recommend your daughter(s) get the vaccine? Are you comfortable that it's still technically considered "clinical" at this stage, even though it could be a complete vaccine against a certain type of cancer?

I am unsure of this. I want to protect my daughter from all that I can but you still don't know. Thankfully I still have about 6 years until I really have to think about it. I can only hope that they will have either taken it off the market by then - or done a lot more research!!!

See, both of my girls are at the age they recommend it being done. Thanks for the info above, I couldn't comment on it... must be too long! LOL It does help to see facts. I am really torn as to what it the right choice. Imagine my feelings 10 years from now when they realize it made the women sterile or something!!!! UGH!

It is not in trials in Canada. It has been approved, and doctors are presenting it as an option to parents. I'm sure people thought this about the chicken pox vaccine a couple of years ago. I think it's a good thing if we can protect our girls as much as we can.

this vaccine was actually offered to me by my ob-gyne during my visit last week. i haven't made a decision yet if i will get it or not. part of me wants to take it since cancer runs in our family. but i still want to talk to my doctor about this and maybe do some research on my own.

My daughter, age 14 had this vaccine not long before her birthday. A few hours later she was doing her competitive swimming training, probably 100 laps. There was a report the other day that in Melbourne, a group of girls all from the one school had side effects, & one was in hospital. IT turned out tew girls were just over reacting, getting all hyped up, & "thinking" something had happened.

at first i was but now i've changed my only because it has way too many side affects and i don't want my daughter to be a guiene pig for some new medicine only for them to start recalling it like they've been doing with alot of this new medicine their coming out with now days. i had hpv and now i don't have anymore because they froze the cells and then removed it from my cervix about 7 years ago and my papsmears have been good every since then.

My daughter is only 4 but eventually she is going to have to get the HPV shot and Im really undecided as to whether or not I will allow her to. If im going to let her get this shot, I need to do some more researchand learn more of what the side affects are. Im not just going to let them tell me she HAS to get a shot without finding out all the information I can. There is no 100% gurantee to this shot, and at those ages girls bodies are not done growing and their hormones are all over the place so im curious as to how the shot would play into that. I hope the manufactures have really done their research on this vaccine because if they didnt there is going to be hell to pay in future.

I don't have daughters, but I asked my sister to be sure to get her own daughter covered. I want to know if older women can get this also. No one wants to answer my question.

I have been thinking alot about this- I think I am going to wait a few years- My daughter is 10-- so she is not sexually active and hopefully will not be for many more years- I am not 100% sure either about side effects, how safe it is, etc. I'd like to see how it works and how many girls have problems with it- so I think I'll give it a few years and then reevaluate. After all it is so new and still "clinical" as you said. If it is safe and the doctor recommends it in a few years then I'm all for it-
