Fan on or off while sleeping?

This is a big argument between me and my spouse some evenings. He likes to have a fan on him when sleeping at night, even though we have A/C. I prefer not to have a fan blowing right on me. I've had problems with getting ear infections, and the doctor has said this might promote me getting them. My husband doesn't believe it because he doesn't get them. Do you have a fan blowing on you when you go to bed?

For me its better to have my fan on during sleep. I seem to enjoy the caress of air when it hits my body. Also we do use only A/C unit for some time and after some hours we turn it off and have the fan circulate the cold air throughout the room. It is said that for you to have the room cooled fast you have to turn on the fan so that the cold air would spread fast and not overexert on the thermostat of your a/c.

That is why we put up ceiling fans through our house was to circulate the air so it cooled down quicker, I just don't like it blowing directly on me when I'm sleeping.

Yep I am a fan on person summer and winter, I have to have the air around me circulating and feel some breeze. That is regardless of the A/c. Being a nurse I can not phathom the direct reason you could aquire ear infections caused by fans, but if thats what your doctor says, then we have to go with that. I am kind to my husband who snuggles deep in the covers while I kick them off, but the air from the fan is directed towards my side of the bed. He lives with it and i think gotten use to it, but it is turned off if I am not sleeping when he is.

I am the same way, I don't turn the fan on when he isn't in there. We have a ceiling fan he put up directly over the bed.

I have a separate a/c unit in my room to help keep it cool. I cannot stand a fan blowing directly on me for very long. It drives me nuts. Now in the room where it's not right on me I could handle but not with it going constantly over me. So you aren't alone there.

My husband prefers to have the fan on when were sleeping, day or night. However, if ever the aircon is turned on, he can do without the fan being turned on aside from the aircon. On the other hand, I prefer to sleep without any fan or aircon if the weather is okay. I only turn the fan on (without any aircon) if it's a humid weather. Our daughter (about 2 years old) has some trouble sleeping without any fan. I think she got it from her father. And I can attribute this behavior with their cool climate there in my in-law's place. They are used to it, so they kind of long for it.

I don't suppose you are saying that your spouse wants both the aircon and fan on while sleeping? I hope not, 'cos unusual and a waste of electricity. For me, I use the fan most of the time although I have airconditioner in my room. I hardly use the aircon unless the night is very hot. The idea of using the fan is more to circulate the air around the bedroom, so that I feel comfortable and can have a good sleep. This is because we usually sleep with the door closed, so there is no through-air circulation, so the fan helps.

Yep, he has to have both of them on in the summer. Now in the winter it is just the fan.

BOTH on? Now I can understand why you end up arguing with your spouse. Either the aircon in your room is not cold enough, or your spouse would like the winter effect in the room during summer, and so needs both the aircon and fan on to achieve that effect!

i always have my fan on while sleeping. but not directly straight on me. my mom says, it's not good to have a fan straight at you... it's just pointed on the floor to let the mosquitoes away. i hope your husband understands your concern. if he does not like a/c, atleast, a fan on but not straight at you.

When I sleep with the AC on, I switch on the fan for the first few minutes until the room is cool and comfortable(till the room reaches the desired temperature), and then switch off the fan. If the Ac is running at the desired temperature, then there is no need of the fan as the temperature itself is quite comfortable.

no i don't... i don't like fan and i hardly use it... when the weather gets too hot, i just use A/C. it is not healthy to have a fan blowing directly to your body for the whole night as well... i heard that it can cause rhemauticsm...

It can be very hot here for a few days in the deep of summer (MA), so we do get a large standing fan out to put in the bedroom which oscillates. It often knocks everything off the desk if we don't aim it properly. but it keeps us cool.

yup. that's what's funny with fans... they blow off most of the light stuffs in the house. hehe. you end up cleaning the house.

I'm siding with your husband- I sleep with a fan 365 days a year- If it's cold out I just add more blankets- And I love the fan to hit me in the face- I'm lucky enough to have found someone who is just like me- I should say he is lucky- lol... I love the noise of the fan and the refreshing air it blows- A/C bothers my sinuses.

When we first got together, my husband and I had this same argument, though without the ear infections. I just didn't like the fan. Finally, we compromised and decided it was easier for me to get more blankets and cover my ears when the fan was on than for him to take off anything else. Now, I tell people the secret to a happy marriage is separate blankets. It's worked for us for 15 years.

I'll have to try that one. It is getting to be an old argument and I need to find some solutions.

Yes, both my husband and I sleep with the fan on every night. No matter how cold it is.....I learned this from my husband. Not a habit that I had before I met him, but now that I started it is hard to sleep without a cool breeze blowing on my face. :)

I'm really allergic with the electric fan since I had rhinitis. The doctor said to avoid strong air pressure in the direction of my nose. But since summer right now is really hot, I can't help but use the fan or else I'll melt =)

I don't like to have the fan blowing straight at me when the A/C is on, it becomes too chilly. I get cold feet and it is uncomfortable. But if the A/C isn't on, I want the fan blowing straight at me.. Hehe.. Cause it keeps me cool. Especially in a humid place like this, if you're not in the A/C you bet you'll be sweating like a pig. I have a hard time sleeping when it's hot, cause I am used to having the A/C on everytime we go to sleep. But as an alternative to A/C, I would also fall asleep having a fan blowing straight at me..

I sleep with both a ceiling fan and an air conditioner, especially in the hot months. I've never gotten ear infections though. If it bothers you to have the fan blowing on you, try to compromise and ask if it can be put on the lowest setting.

a fan? Hmmmmm... never saw this solution, never had and probably never will. If it's to hot I prefer to open a window. Around here nights are cool...:)

i use fan during the days of moderate climate however due to this very often argument arises between my dad and me....feeling the cool breze of fan gives pleasant sensation and gives a sound sleep.... however if its exterme hot we prefer to use a/c..i india sometimes fan fails to give cool breze in the summer time due to excesive heat and humidity....so its /ac during summer time but only in nite..its only during nite we use a/c in summer time bacause due to sudden fluctuaion of temp in room and outside one can get infectious to coug and cold..

Yaa actually i cant sleep with fan off in summers ,in winter also we keep fan on but at a low speed and we don have ac.i think he should understand the problem i mean when ac is on there is no need of fan.i think u need to go for doctor with ur husband so that he believs u.
