What happens when a child loses a tooth?

My almost 6 year old says one of her lower front teeth is loose. At her last dentist visit in April they said it would be a year before her teeth started falling out. I'm afraid to wiggle it to check becaue I remember being told that could make the new one come in crooked. How long will it take to fully fall out and how long until the new one comes in? Will it hurt her? And most importantly, how much should the tooth fairy leave behind!

I always left a toonie when my children lost their teeth but everyone seems to leave a different amount so just leave what you feel comfortable with . You don't want to leave too much where your child is going to want to start looosening all his/her own teeth to get money but you don't want to leave so little that you child is going to be upset that they didn't get much or that the tooth fairy doesn't care about them as much as someone else . If the tooth is really loose , and this you will be able to see then it is ok to help take the tooth out as you don't want your child to lose it while he/she is asleep and choke on it but other then that it will come out when it is ready . It usually takes awhile though for them to lose it so if it just started to get loose you have a couple of weeks anyway , or I should say in most cases as each tooth can take more or less time then another one ,it all depends on how ready it is to fall out and how close the one underneath is to coming out .

My older daughter's tooth first came out when she first turned 6. I think between 5 and 6 is the normal age when baby teeth first start coming out. With that first tooth, the Tooth Fairy left her one dollar, a special letter, and a little toy. Also, since it was her first baby tooth to come out, she got to keep it as a momento. The Tooth Fairy has been keeping the rest of the teeth that have come out, in her jewelry box! My older daughter loved the letter from the Tooth Fairy so much, that she brought it to school to show her 1st grade classmates. I've kept a copy of that letter on my computer so that my younger daughter will receive a letter from the Tooth Fairy when her first baby tooth comes out, which will be very soon, since her 2 bottom teeth are really wiggly. She is 6 and a half years old. The going rate for baby teeth in my house is one dollar, plus a little toy. I usually keep a little stash in my storage room of little toys that I've picked up at yard sales.

Whoops! I forgot to add... sprinkle a little gold glitter around the area where the money is left. This looks like the Tooth Fairy left some "fairy dust" while she was there.

Well, I'm not really know about western culture. However, in my culture, I used to throw upper teeth under my bed, while throw the lower teeth up to my house's roof. Beside that, when I'm still young, my grandma used to help me pull out my tooth. lol.. Or maybe you can ask for dentist advice. For the tooth fairy, I think it depends on yourself, I don't think they have a standard price for it. ^^

Hi doran28! I'm a bit surprised your dentist told you your daughter's baby teeth would not start coming out until she's 7!! Mmmm...that's just not exactly right, as each child is different. My daughter is 5 and has all ready lost two baby teeth! Her tooth will fall out when it's ready - it doesn't need encouragement from anyone. Your little one might have fun wiggling it, or perhaps she doesn't anyone to touch it! After all, at age 6, she may see it as losing an important body part, being too young to truly understand this is supposed to happen. As the adult tooth under the wiggly baby one pushes closer to the surface each day, the baby tooth will get more and more loose, and when you least expect it, it will come right out. My daughter's loose bottom tooth came out when she was eating strawberries - and she swallowed it!!! Some things are better left alone, like the natural events of a growing child's body. When the tooth fairy visited our home for the first time, she left one dollar. My daughter lost her second tooth, and the tooth fairy left one dollar that time, too. That's a lot of money for a 5 to 6 year old! Besides, if the tooth fairy leaves more than that at age 5 or 6, what will the kids expect her to leave by the time they've lost their seventh tooth? Ten dollars??!! The tooth fairy is on a budget, too. Especially now, what with all the traveling she has to do and the price of gas! Relax about the wiggly teeth, visit the library and check out wiggly teeth books (yep, they have them - we've read them), and enjoy this fun time with your daughter!

Well, when your tooth came out, did it hurt? Of course it didn't. So why should hers? About the Tooth Fairy, it depends..it depends on how much you care for her. I'd say leave a loonie or a toonie. Or a few quarters. Giving her a dime would be evil..

Don't worry about the new tooth coming in crooked. If it isn't crooked now, it won't be with the permanent tooth. The tooth will come out when it's ready. If it's wiggly now it probably won't be too long. Losing baby teeth doesn't hurt. The tooth fairy should leave what the budget allows.
