red packet or ang pau - These red packets are red envelopes with certain amount of money inside.
The lucky money here is called Ang Pau in Fujian dialect means red packet. This red packet is a red envelope with certain amount of money in it. Of course not the colorful design of the red envelope that counts but the stuff inside that matters haha… During Chinese New Year Festival on the 1st day of the 1st month of the Chinese lunar calendar children or unmarried adults, no matter how old they are, will be given red packet by their parents or their married elders. For children here the happiest thing during new year festival is the quantity of ang pau received. There are lots of stories related with red packet which I would like to share with friends here in time to come.

Hi laiyongjun, I’m a Chinese from Malaysia. My ancestor came from china haha…and we used to celebrate Chinese new year festival. We Chinese here don’t call it spring festival as we don’t have spring here. Happy postings!

Here in America we don't give our kids lucky money as you call it for celebrations. Some parents might give their child money for a birthday. Usually we give gifts for birthdays and Christmas. A young child might get an Easter basket at Easter time. We have festivals but we don't give our children money for them. We celebrate many different types of festivals such as ethnic and heritage. It is interesting how different our countries are. Thank you for shareing about you spring festivel.

I have never heard of this tradition before my friend and thank you for sharing it, I found it fascinating to read about! We don't have anything like that here in Scotland! I have been wracking my brains for traditions involving money and this is the only one I can think of at the moment! When a couple are getting married the brides father and the groom when they are leaving their homes to go to the ceremony are supposed to fling coins which all the children scramble after and collect - it is called a 'scramble'! It isn't as common now but when I was young all the children knew about every upcoming wedding in the area and would wait outside the house of the bride or groom in great anticipation! xxx
