I read all four of S.E. Hinton's books back in the early 80's. I also saw the movies that were made. I think all had Matt Dillon starring in them. I read in the newspaper this weekend that it is the 40th anniversary since "The Outsiders" was first released. The publishers are releasing a special edition with an interview with S.E. Hinton as well as discussion topics.
Funnily enough, my 14 year old daughter is studying this book in school. I was able to help her with some of the story and we also went to the library and took the movie out. I am stunned that it has been 40 years! I feel so old. I think it is interesting that my daughter is now studying it in school as part of an essay she must right on the topic of homelessness. She has chosen the subject of losing a parent. All the characters in the story have various family dynamics.
And where are all these guys now? Do you remember who was in the movie? Matt Dillon, C. Thomas Howell, Rob Lowe, Tom Cruise, Ralph Macchio, Emilio Estevez, Patrick Swayze, Leif Garrett, Diane Lane... I feel like I may be missing one. But look at the stars these guys have become.
This project has brought me and my daughter to a level where we can communicate with each other on a common topic. Though I am surprised they have chosen this particular story to focus on, it sure brings back memories. Forty years! Wow! I feel old!

This was a wonderful movie. It was one for the Classics. And no, it has not been 40 yrs. since this movie came out. It has only been like 30 at the most. And to look at these stars then, and see where most of them are today, as in BIG stars is impressive as well. I always enjoy seeing the movie any chance I get.
And if you enjoy this movie, have you seen the movie "Alpha Dogs?" It was one I just recently rented after it came out on Video that reminded me of the Outsiders. It is another Good one I highly recommend as well.

Sorry if you misunderstood. It is the 40th anniversary of the release of the BOOK, not the movie. A special edition with an interview with S.E. Hinton and discussion topics will be at the back of the book. I know the movie can't be 40 years old because I'm only 44 and I remember when it came out - I was a teenager.
Haven't seen Alpha Dogs. Thanks for responding.
