Scary Incident

This morning my mother, son and I went to Wal-Mart to do our regular Saturday shopping. My son had already went in ahead of us. As my mother and I were starting into the store these two ladies came out with a buggy. The buggy had a baby carrier sitting in the top of the buggy with the baby inside. Suddenly the baby carrier tumbled over the side of the buggy into the floor!! When I first saw the carrier fall I didn't realize what it was until I saw the baby inside. Thank the Lord the mama had buckled her in safely! When the carrier it the baby didn't get hurt at all!! The mother naturally was scared to death, took the baby out of the carrier and into her arms. She burst into tears, thankful that her baby was okay. My mother and I went over to she and her friend. I patted the girl on the arm and assured her that when I saw the carrier hit the baby was not hit in any way. Of course she was still scared, as I would have been too. I couldn't help buy cry myself just because I felt so sorry for the mother. She said it was her first baby and it absolutely terrified her. Of course, no matter if it was the first or any other child this would have scared the poor girl. I'm just so thankful that the baby was okay. She had a friend with her who was helping her to calm down, so the story had a very good ending.

Ouch what an awful thing to have happened. I can not imagine the fear for that poor Mom. So glad you were there to offer support, but you know we see warnings every day about how dangerous something like that is with shopping carts. Thank goodness all is well, I am sure that mom will beat herself up for a long time to come over the incidence. Poor thing.

Hi Angelwhispers! That is true, they post signs about being careful when putting babies in the buggies. I bet she never puts the carrier on the top like that again. I sure did feel sorry for her though because we can all make mistakes. The main thing is the baby is fine. Thanks for responding. :)

Sounds like there was an angel watching over the baby and that's why she didn't get hurt and she was buckled up too. I know I would be scared too.

I think so to aprilgrl. It really would have been bad if the baby wasn't buckled in. She would have literally fallen out of the carrier and the carrier would have probably landed on top of her. The mother was pitiful. I'm glad she had a friend along with her, hopefully she drove them home. I'm sure she will never place the carrier in the top part of the buggy again.

Something similar to this happened to me, only worse. My baby was colicky so my husband and I took turns driving her around in the car in the middle of the night. This night I was preparing to take her out and I put her, strapped into her car seat, onto a ledge between the upper and lower staircases. The kind of car seat I had rocks unless you lock legs up for feeding purposes. The car seat tumbled over backwards and down a whole flight of stairs to the basement floor. The car seat was upside down and I turned it over (screaming the whole time). She had a sleeper that was a little too big for her so the sleeves hung over her hands sometimes. When I didn't see her hand I thought her arm was missing. I continued to scream. My husband came flying down the stairs, butt naked, and told me to stop screaming, that I would wake up our 3 year old. I didn't care about the 3 year old waking up, I almost killed my baby! He took the baby up to bed with him and I sat in the family room and cried for an hour. The positive side is that it sure does prove how strong and protective the car seat was. It is scary when something like this happens and you, as a mother, can't help but blame yourself. Fortunately that baby was okay, like mine. (Although mine, now 10 years old, is a little nutty. I think she's had too many falls! LOL!)

I'm glad your baby didn't suffer any harm. It is wonderful how safe car seats can be. As mothers we all have things happen from time to time that we naturally blame ourselves for. I don't think we would be a good or normal mother if we didn't.

Sometimes you can do everything right, and still something happens to your child. I'm glad to hear the baby was OK. She'll never remember it, but her mother will.

That's true AmbiePam, I'm sure she will blame herself even though it could have happened to any of us. We kept assuring her she is good mother. The baby was so precious. After she got over being scared she started smiling at us and made you just want to give her a big bear hug. :)

That sure was scary. I'm so glad the baby was not hurt. It is going to take the mom awhile to get calmed down. I'm sure it helped her, that you were there and saw it happen and could assure her that the baby didn't get hit. PTL that she had buckled the baby in safely.

Yes most definitely Praise the Lord because if she hadn't been buckled in she would have literally fallen out of the carrier and I really think it would have landed on top of her. That could have caused some serious injuries. But her mama had done an excellent job of buckling her in.

at most walmarts they have carts big enough if they are up in the buggy seat that the back of the car seat will latch in and keep the baby seat from going anywhere!! but i can understand her fear!! I remember the first time my daughter decided to roll and rolled right off the couch!! I thought i was going to have a heart attack!!!! First babies are always the toughest but from there on it gets easier with time!!!

You are right. I'm not sure if she had the carrier latched or not. It all happened so fast. At first I didn't even realize that it was a carrier, I just saw something tumble off and then I saw the baby. The mother started crying and picking her up and hurrying to get her out to hold her. The baby was crying but it was only because it scared her. I was so happy to see her start smiling because we knew then she was all right. It certainly could have been much worse had she not buckled the little one in safely. :)

Believe me, I would rather see a mother get freaked out and be over protective than act like they don't care. I am over protective of my two also and they are practically grown. :)

My God! It is so scary. The child is such a delicate one. Good thing, nothing happened to the child. It is so nice of you to have gone and consoled the mum. At those circumstances, what one requires is moral support, which you have given.

I do sympathize with her. I am so glad that she did buckle the baby in and the baby was ok. I would imagine that the girl was more terrified than the baby. I am glad that there are good people out there that genuninely care for others.

That is a sweet thing for you to say, but I just try to treat others the way I would want to be treated myself. God has blessed me in many ways, more than I can ever count, and if I can do just a little bit to pass those blessings on to someone else I want to do it. He has comforted me in times of distress when no one else could. I just hope I was able to help her a little. :)

Whew, what a horrific story you shared, It actually gave me a warning or should I say when it comes to babies, SAFETY FIRST counts a lot. Just timely, will be a Mom soon.

Wow, if i was the mother i would have been so upset too! it's awful when you have a scare with your child. I remember when i first bought my daughter home i was scared all the time that i would drop her lol. one day i got my foot caught up in my pants and tripped but luckily i managed to fall onto my knees. needless to say it hurt but the baby was safe so i didnt care. Scared the pants off me though (pardon the pun lol)

Hi mamacathie! I hope I was able to help her feel some better. I'm sure at the time that all she could do was blame herself. But my mother, the greeting lady from Wal-Mart and I all assured her that she is a good mother. Shucks, it could have happened to anybody.

oh no that poor first time mama! i would have been freaking out and crying too! it's so scary if ANYTHING happens to our children. poor thing, i'm feeling her poor heart beating right now even! once our son stood up in the front where they sit in those carts, and just lunged out at my hubby who was standing right next to the cart, but was NOT prepared to catch him, i mean he had the buckle on, and all of a sudden he was out. it's amazing what they are capable of, and we don't know of it. i was down the aisle a bit. some nice gentleman caught him, just happened to be RIGHT there....i could not believe he could even stand himself up in those things, but he did, and it was in slow motion, yet we couldn't reach to him in time. it was horrible, he was maybe just 2. but her baby in the carrier, OH, my heart would have stopped. bless her heart.

Babies are a lot stronger sometimes than we ever imagine aren't they? I'm glad that gentleman was close by when your son did that and was able to catch him.
