Chicken Pox parties???? What!!???

I read a few years ago in our local newspaper about how some parents of children who had chicken pox would throw little playdate parties and open it up to those who wish their children to get the chicken Pox. I was apalled. It just seemd so wrong. The reasoning behind it made sense. sort of. The parents wanted their kids to get it while they were kids so better time than never to make sure your child caught it. Someone mentioned I should do the same while my kid has a mild outbreak of it. I politely declined. What are your thoughts on this? How does it make so much sense to one and not another? How do you feel right about purposely exposing others to this kind of sickness and not feel bad?

My mom has done that with me and my sister when we were kids but it was for the german meassels with some of our friends so that we could get them over with but my sister got them and I never did I always made fun of her for that. I know when my son came down with the chicken pox I kept all three of my kids to gether so that they would all get them and I would not have to worry about that one. so I spent three weeks one after another having them.

My mom has talked about people doing that when we were kids. There were four of us so it just seemed to happen around our house. It is definitely one of those things that is better to have as a child. I have even heard that an adult male that comes down with it can be rendered sterile from it.

I never heard that about the being sterile and all. That would be horrible.

We did it! We have 4 kids. When chicken pox broke out in the family of one of their friends, we brought all 4 kids over to play. Sure enough, all four of our kids got it at the same time... we were prepared for it, we got over with it in a matter of weeks and haven't had a problem with it since. Kids are going to get chicken pox, it might as well be when the parents are prepared for it.

I agree it is better toget it over with at the same time. Growing up as #5 of 6 kids it is a wonder I was the last to get them and years after everyone else. We lived in the same house and shared everything for goodness sakes. BUt we never got them at the same time. I just feel so bad for the suffereing child. Right not at age 6 my son would be devastated if one of his friends caugth them and hten blamed him later, He doesn't really understand that it is a contagious childhood disease that eventually everyone will have at least once in their life.

I'll admit I made sure all my kids got exposed by playing with kids that had it. There was no 'party' involved, though. I just wanted them to get CP while they were still young. I got it when I was 16 and had a HORRIBLE time. The older you get, the sicker you will get once you get it. My kids all got it before they were 6. It didn't even slow them down and now the antibodies are there. I did make sure to not expose anyone else to it, though.

I have heard of people doing that. But I think it is too weird. I wouldnt want to force my kid to get chicken pox. I would want them to get them when they get them. Without aiding in the help of them getting chicken pox.

I feel the same way. It works for some I guess, but I would hate to purposely do that to my child.
