FDA Warns About Poison Chemical In Some Toothpaste

United States
June 15, 2007 3:37pm CST
With all the recalls on pet food and human food, we must be more careful than ever when it comes to what we put in our bodies and out pets bodies. As if all the food recalls were not enough, the government has just issued a warning about toothpaste containing poison chemicals. That is scary as even our toddlers use toothpaste. Then on top of that the Colgate Palmolive Company has put out a warning about toothpaste that contains poison chemicals being sold under the name of colgate that is actually counterfeit. I cam really concerned about this! Can you believe it? You can read about these warnings yourself at the Government site. The US Food and Drug Administration. It is not a rumor, it is fact. The consumers need to be aware of this problem. This notice was released on June 1st 2007 According to the Federal Citizen Information Center “The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned consumers to avoid using tubes of toothpaste labeled as made in China, and issued an import alert to prevent toothpaste containing the poisonous chemical diethylene glycol (DEG) from entering the United States.” More info can be found here: http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/NEWS/2007/NEW01646.html According to the Food and Drug Administration “The Colgate-Palmolive Company warned that counterfeit toothpaste falsely packaged as 'Colgate' has been found in several dollar-type discount stores in four states: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. There are indications that this product does not contain fluoride and may contain Diethylene Glycol. The Company stated that it does not use, nor has ever used, Diethylene Glycol as an ingredient in Colgate toothpaste anywhere in the world. The counterfeit toothpaste can be easily recognized because it is labelled as 'Manufactured in South Africa.' Colgate does not import toothpaste into the United States from South Africa. In addition, the counterfeit packages examined so far have several misspellings including: 'isclinically' 'SOUTH AFRLCA' 'South African Dental Assoxiation'“ More Information can be found here: http://www.fda.gov/oc/po/firmrecalls/colgate06_07.html Had you already heard about this? This is the first I had heard of it. It is just plain scary.

You should take the time to read the articles that I posted the link to from the FDA. I bet They knew this and did not tell us until June first. That is of great concern to me.

Thats because they are all worried about their money and how much they will possibly lose. We as consumers are always last to know..

seems like to truly know we are safe we will have to just plant our own foods and produce. Seems like something is always trying to kill us or our animals nowdays.

I have been hearing about this for a few days, but yours is the most complete information I have seen so far. I am confident in the toothpaste I have on hand right now, as I have bought up in bulk, and usually buy from Sam's club. Another alternative is to use baking soda moistened with peroxide. It helps whiten and freshen, or baking soda moistened with mint mouth wash. Grandma had us use salt and soda but that is rather harsh and can blister your mouth. I hope that people are paying attention to their labels. Good post.

I don't know when we are going to learn in our country that it is time to stop imports! It seems that other countries do not have the same strict safety standards in place which are in place in the US. I know it means that items will cost a bit more, but I am willing to pay a few cents more for my toothpaste than to die!

I totally agree and I believe that most Americans would be willing to pay a little more but I wonder if we really would have to pay more. Think about it, it would put more people to work, more income into our own country and then we may possibly even be able to get it cheaper. They would not need as much of our taxes to pay for unemployed families and the list goes on and on.

I do not use Colgate as I have sensitive teeth and I use Sensodyne. I think it was originally made in Europe. I used to use Colgate and Crest, but my teeth still hurt even when I had no cavities.

Yes ,I have seen ii on the News here in Canada. I am not too worried about it though. I seldom buy my toothpaste from anywhere but Walmart. The toothpaste in Question comes from South Africa of all places, well Colgate is not made there so that is a clue right off. It is pretty bad that who ever makes this stuff gets away with putting such ingredients as anti-freeze. Do these people care about other people at all or are they just out for the the Almighty dollar? More and More innocent people will die because of the greed of others.

I heard about this as well and it is scary to know that there is poisonous toothpaste out there. It sounds like something a terrorist may think about doing and hope they can get this out of the stores so people will be safer. I do not use Colgate so hopefully I am safe but it makes me and probably others wonder what we are using. It is sad that people would try and find ways of harming people like that. I would not buy toothpaste at dollar stores either.
