my husband brought me in some eggs from the barn for his lunch. Can't get much fresher than that! So I have the butter melting in the pan - the sausage on the ready - crack one egg - plop - sizzle, crack the other egg and no plop - oooooze I throw the egg down, scream in that oh so delicate blood curdling manner I have, and blood is drooling all over my stove top from the egg I threw down. It was an incubated chick probably about day 17....augh. I had to have my son take care of cleaning it up, it made me too ill to look at it.

OMG! That would have made me sick also! Poor chick. Once in a while I will get an egg from the store that has some blood in it and it totally turns me off from eating eggs for a long time.

the drop of bed, while unappetizing in appearance is not from a forming chick - rather just a piece of tissue from the hen that sloughed off during the process of making the egg, the last thing to go on the egg is the shell - or actually that is the second to last thing, the last thing to go on is the color of the shell... :)

I have no idea why my fingers typed "bed" instead of blood! I am getting so old!

I guess I really didn't need to know the process of the egg making. I am totally grossed out now!

Oh god that's horrible. I feel for you. That happened to a co-worker of mine when I worked at McDonalds, she was making the eggs for the egg-mcmuffins and one of the eggs was fertilized, it wasn't quite as bad as what happened to you but I don't think she even ate egg again unless it came out of a carton.

Oh that is gross, I have lived on and grown up on a farm and around animals most of my life. And I know how gross that is.

I had that happen once from a store bought egg. It was so gross, I stopped eating eggs for the longest time, and even now I don't eat them as much as I used to. I am sorry you had to witness that, my stomach is turning just thinking about it... :(

Oh my Gosh! Yuck! lol I don't know how long that would make me stop eating eggs for. I'm kind of funny about eating eggs anyways. Sometimes I love them, other times I'm kind of disgusted by them. I don't know why. That's just how I am. If I saw what you did. ugh. I can't imagine.

oh I am so sorry that happened, I am sure you felt really bad that it happened but I guess that would or can happen from time to time when you are getting the eggs from your own chickens that is really cool!!

If you want to eat the eggs your chickens lay then you need to keep the roosters away from the hens.

Just wanted to add that if you want to eat the eggs you need to gather at least once a day and put in the fridge. Day 17 for an egg isn't to fresh. Have you been raising chickens long?

sheesh louise, it did not get marked. we let some hens go broody, not a problem. we mark the eggs they sat on and collect all others. this one either did not get marked or the mark wore off. husband said it was not under the hen when he gathered it - so, she probably pushed it aside because it was already nasty.

as far as keeping the roosters separate- we let our poultry free range. part of the reason we got them is for tick control, they do not do well at this if they are penned up. we also like the eggs better from free ranging, they are healthier and tastier. we also think it makes for happier chickens :) The roosters are good protectors to the hens, we do not want them penned up or separated. as a consequence this incident happened today. I am over it already. it is the first time this has happened in 7 years. the risk is worth it for having happy chickens :)

We have several hens, but we don't have a rooster - that way the eggs never get fertilized, so there's no chance of that happening.

Oh that happened to my mom when i was a kid. We lived on a farm and we had fresh eggs as well. My mother was making us eggs for breakfast as I was standing next to her, telling her to hurry up and I saw that happen as it happened to you. I was so sick, I didn't eat another egg for quite some many years and still to this day I still have issues eating eggs unless they are smothered in ketchup and pepper.

my son will not touch eggs either. he loved them as a little kid - but probably around age 11 with the realization of what they actually are, he can not bear the thought of eating one. but he loves to candle them, and hatch them...etc.
