They say that T'ai Chi is a very difficult form of martial arts training.Also that although it is very beneficial to ones health,one has to practice for many years in order to be able use the martial aspects of the system. So it seems that one should rather consider some other form of martial art in order to defend oneself and ones loved ones and property.

It depends on what you want to use it for. If you want only to defend yourself, then karate or jujitsu wouled be what you want. T'ai Chi and T'ai Kuan Do are two forms of martial arts more geared to mental and physical health. Yoga is also good for limberness and physical and mental health and it is less strenuous than the others.
