Question for the computer experts....

I mainly use Microsoft Works on my home computer. I didn't feel like paying the extra money for MS Word, when I don't type that many documents. But, I still had Word Pad, Power Point, and Word just in a limited capacity. So, my computer was acting up, thought I may have downloaded a virus that affects the Microsoft Office products that were still on my computer, so I went to remove programs and removed Microsoft Office. Mistake, it was my keyboard that my daughter spilled my coffee on and I didn't notice it...Now, I have these documents I saved in Word Pad, and can't get to them....so, my question is, if I download the free 60 day trial of Microsoft Office from MS, will it leave the basics on my computer again like it was originally, or is there another way to convert those files to Works? Please...easy to understand language :)

Good question :) Yes, I have tried that, and for some reason whenever I try to do a system restore it doesn't work. Says it can't complete it and pick another date. Any idea what that means? I did pick dates that were bold too.
