Homemade or store bought?

When your children were on baby food did you make your own food for them or did you use the store bought baby food? If your children are on baby food now what are you feeding them? When My children were on baby food I always made homemade food for them. I would make porridge to the appropriate thickness and when they got a little older I would take the meat, potato and veggies from my plate and put it through the blender(separately) and fed them that. They loved it and I could regulate what was going into it. It was also much easier on the budget! What do you prefer to feed your children?

first of all, i would like to say that Baby food taste just so DISGUSTING!! i cannot stand the taste and smell of it so i dont recommend giving babies baby food. it looks so rotten and mashed and you dont know what exactly have been put into it, probably rotten peaches you'll never know. I would prefer to feed my children homemade food, when i was a baby, my mum used to give me milk when i was like few months old and i just refused to drink any, so they gave up and make food like porridge and added some flavor and i just loved it! =D so when i have children i think i wiould give them porridge as well... as for one im NOT going NEAR any baby food. as for two... i can have some porridge myself =D

LOL good plan! I think the boxed stuff is just disgusting as well. I also was not one for porridge myself, I had to have a craving for it in order to eat it but now I like it much more and have to eat it more often for health reasons. I gave my children milk at an early age as well. They really liked the fact that they got to eat what mommy and daddy ate. Thanks for the comment. :)

Yes they do. My kids loved eating what we did and it made it easier to feed them. :)

haha no problem... i love porridge as well... and yes children tend to "want to be adult" and do what they do, it is a good idea to eat at the same time as hey do infront of them, would get them to open their mouth much more easily xD

When my children were young, I did a little of both. Some meals, I would use the store-bought baby food jars (if what I was eating didn't seem appropriate for a baby) and other times, I made their food from mine! If I had cooked for the family and had just a serving as leftovers, I would mash it or blend it and put in ice cube trays to freeze. The next day, I would thaw them and use for their meals.

Hehe, oh trust me, we were/are plainjane too! I was talking about the nights that I had been too tired/lazy to cook and ordered a pizza or stopped at a burger joint! Ha!

LOL oh ok. Ya pizza wouldn't be the best for them. I have ground up some hamburger patties though. :)

That is another valid point. I guess I never really had something that the kids could not eat I was always a plain Jane person when it came to cooking so it wasn't a problem with me. I do know that some do have some very spicy or inappropriate meals that would be very harmful to the child and it would be good to have the alternative handy. That is a great idea with the ice cubes as well I would never have thought of doing that! Thanks for the comment. :)

When my son was a baby we bought organic baby food from Central Market. He really loved the food and we were able to give stuff that we couldn't have afforded for ourselves like butternut squash and asparagus. I had never seen those flavors in the regular stores. He is 5 and loves his veggies. I cannot say that about many 5 year olds. My son will choose broccoli and carrots over mashed potatoes and corn. He loves his potatoes and corn, but given a choice he will choose the carrots and broccoli. My son loves yellow squash and butternut squash and acorn squash. How many 5 year olds like acorn squash? Not too many that I know of. If I ever have another child, we will buy the organic baby food again.

Wow that is great. I didn't have that option unfortunately or I may have done the same. That is good information and alternative for any new mothers or people that will be parents to look into. Thank you for sharing that with us. :)

It is a blend of both homemade as well as store bought in my case. The fruits are all store made(I was pureeing banana earlier but my son likes the store made fruits better). But the veggies and the actual full meal which is pureed rice and vegetables and curry is completely homemade. I used to give him cereal until a month ago but he didn't like it that much, although he is not very picky with food.

I fed my son jarred baby food because it was easier but I really wish I would have took the homemade route. It's cheaper and healthier and it doesn't have all of those disgusting fillers. Have you ever tasted bananas in a jar? It doesn't taste bad but it does NOT taste like bananas.

LOL I honestly can't say I have tasted bananas in a jar so I will take your word for it! It is much healthier and cheaper to go the homemade route. I am really glad I did it. Thanks for the comment. :)

I bought store bought food. Never the meat kind though, that's just nasty! Usually just fruits and veggies. My husband and I eat a lot of dishes that a baby isn't quite ready for. Now he's at age where we can start including him a bit more in our meals. He loves people food and watches us intently if we're eating something he can't have. I can't wait until he can start eating actual meals with us, but that will be a few more months.

Store bought food would be the best for him then. You wouldn't want to trying something that will affect him negatively or he won't try new things. You will enjoy his company when he can join you with your meals I am sure. Thanks for the comment. :)

I bought baby food for the most part. Usually Del Monte or Gerber. When they got a little older I would mashed green beans, corn and such and feed them that instead. They liked it better and it was less expensive. Neither of my boys liked the jarred meats. They were to dry or something, I guess.

Maybe. The homemade stuff seemed to go over well for my children as well. I liked the savings I had with the homemade food. Thanks for the comment. :)

I used store bought for all my children but my son . With my son I used to make all his baby food and freeze it but found this was a lot of work and was much easier to just buy the food for the other children . The one good advantage to making your own baby food besides it being cheaper is that you are pretty much guaranteed when your child gets older they will enjoy your cooking because this is what they started on . I had read this in a book one time and it did make sence to me !!

Yes it is a fair amount of work to make it yourself. I just felt that it was worth it knowing what I was putting in my baby's mouth. I love to cook as well so it just didn't seem that much like work to me. You make a good point as well about the baby used to your cooking because this is what they started on, I never really thought of that. I was doing it more for the cost effectiveness of it and the health factor. Thanks for the comment. :)

I did a little of both. I would give them some store bought and I would make a lot of it myself. That was when I was staying home, I don't know if now I would have the time to do that.

When my first son was little I bought the store bought food because i thought I had to. This time I usually feed my youngest what we are eating. It is so much easier on the budget, and I can better control what he is eating. There are a lot of preservatives and dyes in the prepackaged baby foods that I can avoid by feeding him what we eat.

Yes I agree. I liked the control of what they were eating. Even when they got old enough to bake etc... themselves we made everything and never bought alot of stuff like cookies etc.. from the store. We had someone living with us for a while and I tried to teach her to make everything as well but she refused. She would go and buy pizza pops and I would tell her it is cheaper to buy the stuff and make them yourself and she would just roll her eyes and get them anyway. She had said she needed something and I was about to say something and she turned around and said "I know it is cheaper to get the stuff and make it myself" LOL At least she heard me! Thanks for the comment.:)

I always bought store bought baby food. I guess that it never crossed my mind to make home made baby food. I figured that the store bought food had the right amounts of vitamins ect needed for the baby.

Yes it does have all the vit. and min. in it I believe but it also has the preservatives in it as well. I was on a fixed budget when my children were small and me making their food really helped. They never ate a whole lot at that age so it lasted a long time. I also think they stayed full longer with the homemade stuff but never tested that theory to see for sure. LOL Thanks for the comment. :)

When my son is very young i just bought from the store because i dont know much about preparing food for the little one just before 1 year old. When my son eat food just like what we eat i did not buy from store anymore. I give the food that we eat but its only a little amount. He can eat the food we eat because its all healthy. Fruits and vegetables, a little meat and only a taste of sweets. Its good that you make your own food for your children and i believe its really good for the budget.

Knowing how to prepare it was the easy part you just threw everything in a grinder or blender and mix. If needed add a little water to make it the right thickness that would e for the lunch and supper. For Breakfast you would just make a very runny bowl of porridge. It is good that he is old enough now to eat what you do it is so much easier on the budget. Thanks for the comment. :)

I'm a senior male, 73 yrs old and still working every day. I've raised 4 boys and been interested in Health and nutrition all my Life. Let me say, from my experience, the Cardinal Rule of good health is, Cook your Own Food, DO NOT eat prepared Store Bought Food! The vast numbers of Obese People are all the proof thats needed. Read the labels on the prepared food. Notice the chemical preservatives added, and the Artificial Sweeteners. Can these preservatives and artificial ingredients be good for your health? Teach your kids to cook and prepare their own food, and watch them stay slender and healthy!

AMEN! I so agree with that. I had a heart attack last month and I was never one to read the labels on things but I was always one to make my own meals, but having to read labels now made me realize how much sodium and chemicals were in the foods I was buying. Somebody will offer me something and I have to refuse because of my diet now because of how it is made. It was a real eye opener! Thank you so much for this information. :)

I think it is great that you are making your own baby food. I just didn't have the time or energy to do so when my son was that age, so we bought baby food. Maybe when we have another child I will try the same...

Life wasn't as busy then as it is nowadays so I understand completely. I saw it more as just another part of the meals. It came routine rather quick for me and because I included my daughter in it it was something that was more like a project for us. :)

I did store bought with the first five but number six has only gotten homemade with the exception of a few leftover jars that number five didn't eat that hadn't expired yet. I like that he's not getting all the added "stuff" that goes into store bought and I'm not spending nearly as much on food for him...actually I haven't spent any money at all on food exclusively for him. He gets the same things the rest of us eat just in a different form.

Yes I couldn't believe the amount I did save on food for my children by doing it that way. I found they ate and slept better as well using the homemade stuff. Thanks for the comment. :)

I have two children, but they aren't babies anymore. However when I had my first child, I started out making homemade baby food for her. But that didn't last very long. Going to the store and buying the store bought jars was just so much easier and less time consuming for me. I think it's wonderful that some parents take the time to make their own homemade baby food.

Store bought is much easier for the family on the go. When I did it up I often made more than I needed and so I didn't have to constantly make it. More with the porridge though. Thanks for the comment. :)

I did store bought. But looking back on things I wish I had done homemade. You always learn so much from your first one that you wish you had done differently. At least now I know if I ever have another one some ways to save money on food.

LOL isn't that the truth. I also find with the first one people seem to do all the name brand and the "best" of everything and the more kids they have the more they go to the second hand stores for clothes and they get the cheaper stuff. Yes this is a great way to save money on food and you can put the amount of salt etc.. in that you want. Thanks for the comment. :)

I did a combination of both too. I remember cooking and pureeing but it was easier to have ready made jars if we were going out. I did everything to the letter with our first - sterilising, washing, making own food - but there was no time with the second being just under two years later and feeling guilty that I had not been able to carry my toddler as I was too pregnant. So I needed to spend what time I could playing with him afterwards and not sterilising things for baby.

LOL boy that sounds familiar! My daughter, who was the first, would help me make the baby's meal. She was just under two as well when I had my son. Anyway, she then decided she should have some and so I gave her some and she took one bite and she got this funny look on her face, she turned up her nose and was like ewww! LOL My boy sure liked it though! Thanks for the comment. :)

It is much easier to use the boughten stuff to take along if you were out. I didn't go out that often for meals so I never had to worry about it. I tried to make sure we were home at meal time. Thanks for the comment. :)
