Hamster Owners...question

I currently have 1 hamster now. He's about a year old. His mom died a few months ago, she was about 1 1/2-2 years old. I've read so many conflicting articles on what to feed them though. I read one that said a little bit of veggies and occasionally a small piece of fruit only once a week or less, another that said to feed the veggies daily. I know too much veggies in their diets can give them diarrhea if they're not used to it. So, awhile back I cut out all the veggies, just very in frequently. I know hamsters have a short life span, average of 2 years, but I wonder if that's what caused mama hammie die so early? I gave them daily some a seed diet, and added in some of the hamster pellets. But, I also know that the females are more likely to die earlier if they have a litter(or whatever baby hammies are called lol) because of the hormones or something. Before she died, she got really fat and lazy-no more wheel, she still came down and ate and drank everyday, then her fur started thinning, and she took on a dehydrated look-even though she was still eating and drinking till the day she died. It was sad, she was so pathetic to look at. I figured it was some kind of kidney problem, I know they're also prone to a lot of things. But anyway, back to my question, what exactly is supposed to be a good diet for them? Or rather, what are the majority of you guys feeding yours? I now feed the seeds, a few of the bigger pellets, and a small amount of veggies everyday. Usually I feed him whatever I'm giving to the rabbit-a pea, romaine lettuce, carrots, parsley, etc.-again, these are little pieces of the veggies, not a lot.

Aww I'm sorry to hear about mama hammie! I remember being so sad when I lost both of my females to wet-tail when I was younger. Hamsters are generally very healthy and fit animals, but the problem is their immune system - if something does go wrong, it is likely to kill them, no matter how small. Did you know that hamsters can even catch human colds? And not surprisingly, that too can kill them. It's a shame because they are such lovely animals, I've got an 8 week old syrian hamster, we've called him Chuck and he's so sweet! Feeding often causes a lot of controversy. With my hamster, I try to vary his diet, so he doesn't get bored of it, and to make sure he's getting all the nutrients he needs. I've got a basic hamster muesli mix from the pet shop, with seeds and pellets and things. The I got him some 100% herbal hamster food from e-bay, it's got dandelions and chamomile and all sorts of things in there that hamsters love to eat. I alternate these foods each day. I usually give him one bran-flake each day - because of the fibre content, it can prevent diarrhea. I give him corn-flakes too. I try not to give him any 'hamster sweet treats' because I read the ingredients once, and was shocked to find how much sugar is in them, which can't be good for something so small! I feed him fruit-wood, he likes that. Only recently I've started feeling him veggies, and when I do give them to him,I measure the piece against my pinky fingernail, and I give him no bigger than that. He also likes cheese - as long as it's mild white cheddar, it's good for hamsters because of the protein an calcium - again I measure it against my fingernail. I read somewhere that hamsters eat meat, also - I got a bit freaked out by this, but some people give them small quantities of monkeychow! Umm... I think that's all I feed him, he doesn't really like fruit that much, but fruit can cause diarrhea, because of it's high water content, but if everything is in moderation, and the great majority of his diet is his normal hamster mix, there should be no problem - I just follow these 3 rules - not too watery, nothing sugary, nothing salty. I know I waffled on a lot then, but a great site for hamster advice is http://www.hamsterific.com Hope this helps :o)

Thanks for all the info and the link-got it saved to my favorites! That's a good way to measure you're fingernail lol. I usually rip off a tiny piece of whatever the bunny gets and feed the hammie. Fruit is very rare for him, though he does love it :) I remember reading that a bit of cheese and meat was good for females that were pregnant or just had babies(yes, we made that mistake too lol). Because of the extra calcium and protein like you mentioned. I would put a little piece of scrambled eggs, think I've put in a tiny piece of chicken as well-they loved it and the cheese. I think you're right also, variety is usually good for most animals. And, like Tia said, I think some just will love longer then others. That's interesting though about the colds, didn't know that! I knew ferrets could catch human colds, but hammies too huh? Wow! Well thanks again for your info! Nice to see everyone's opinions or what they've tried/done. Too much inconsistent info out there lol :)

We fed ours anything that was made for hamsters. :) There are yogurt bites that ours loved! And there were some vita-bites that also help as a weekly source in vitamins to ensure the little tyke is getting what it needs. :) Mainly, since they have such a short life span, it is best to find what they like and enjoy them while they are around. I have found some live only a year while others might life just over two years. And they were all treated the same.

I've seen the yogurt bites, I didn't know they were vitamins though. I remember looking for vitamins for them, kinda expensive though, guess I'll check out those yogurt bite treats. I think you're right, just enjoy them for their short lives, they are funny lol. These were the first hamsters I've ever had-mom wouldn't let us get one when we were kids. I got a feeling there's a lot of them that are inbred, which probably is why some live longer then others, just my opinion though.

We always fed ours hamster/gerbil food from the pet store, and they lived a long time! We had one that lived almost 3 years. We only fed ours fresh fruits and vegetables about 1 a week, and then only a piece of a carrot, or a grape. Never very much.
