Does it annoy you the way some people treat books?

I quite often purchase used books, and even though I know a lot of people have read them, one thing that annoys me is when there are corners that have been folded over to mark ones place. That's what bookmarks are for! How about you, have you got things that annoy you in regards to books?

I agree with you folding the corners of books is definetly a no-no. A book should be respected. However in case of used books, it did belong to someone else. They have the right to do whatever they wanted with it, including folding the corners. Sometimes there may not be a bookmark around. What really bothers me with used books is when they have written in them, or highlighted or underlined certain sections or passages. I can usually tell really quick who read the book in order to do a report.

That is true, and yes, it is even more annoying when the books have been written in or highlighted. Guess not all people have the same respect for books.

I think some people just don't know any better. When I was but a lad I must confess to having folded the corners over a time or two myself. After reading those books again later on I realized how much more difficult it made things.

Yes, I think when we are younger, we soon learn how to treat books once we start buying our own.

i hate the way others treat books! folded pages, bent and messed up or ripped covers..the darn ppl that fold the whole book backwards in half to be able to hold it with one hand! thats exactly the reasons why i dont let ppl borrow my books..and unless i can find used books in pristine condition..i dont buy them.

i have books that ive read about 6 times the covers are not bent. sure there may be a couple of light creases on the binding, but certainly not the cover..if you take care of them they stay looking like new thru a LOT of reads.

Yes, I am rather particular with my books, and don't usually lend them out either. I am not happy with some of the used books condition that I buy, but at the cheap prices I can sometimes get them at, at least I can tell myself at least I didn't make them that condition.

Oh yes, I hate it a lot. I take care of my books a lot and even cover them with plastic wrapper.. I hate it when people just throw their books around and leave them everywhere. They don't know how to take care of their books at all.

I have go a few of my older ones covered with plastic contact, but that was from way back when I was living with my parents, and my mum did them. I guess I just never really thought to do them myself. Yes, books were not made to be tossed about, and deserve much more respect.

Absolutely it annoys me! I don't tend to buy used books, but I do get books out from the library, and the condition some of them have been in is appalling. Folded corners are annoying, but even worse is when a page or pages have been torn out, then returned to the library without saying anything, that's very frustrating!

Ripped out pages is definitely wrong, and there is no need for it. You would think people who use libraries would have more sense!

yes it is annoying habit that some people have, I always use a bookmark and if I come across pages that have been dog tagged, I straighten them. I even don't like when people keep an open book turned face down, I just pick it up and close it after marking their page with a piece of paper.

That is another of the things that I don't like either, books left open, face down. It is good to unfold corners, but the crease remains, which is something we have to put up with.

You have touched on one of my pet peeves. I love my books. I treat them very well. I can have books for years, read them several times, and they are still in pristine condition. They still look new. No creases in the spin, no folded pages, no folded covers. So, yes, it annoys me greatly when I see how others treat books.

My books are like that also, the ones I bought new that is, except for a couple of earlier ones. The problem seemed to come more from the publishers, as the pages seem to come away from the cover in blocks. I guess that is one of the problems with thick paperbacks.

Yes it annoying to see some people treat their books very shabbily. As they sometimes have oil stains on it or ink marks all over the pages. Then some pages have been torn or the cover of the book has been torn or removed. Or something has been scribbled over the pages or higlighted. I feel we should keep our books properly, preserve them and look after them then only we can gain knowledge from books. Cheers:)

I don't think pens or pencils should be anywhere near novels, but that is hard for people doing book reviews. Torn pages are bad, ripped out is worse. Books are a great source of entertainment and learning and yes, they should be preserved.

Pages that are ripped out, form library books! OMG! I went to pick up some books last week and 2 had pages ripped out, scribbles inside. I hate how some people treat books like garbage. Books are what keep our minds going, books are life. I don't see why one has to treat them so badly.

Pages ripped out is a shocking thing to do to a book. It is bad enough that someone would do that to their own book, but from a library book just shows some people don't deserve the pleasure of books.
