Do you have a cat litter box in your house? Have you had one in the past? Would you recommend one for folks with cats?

Yes, we've had a litter box in our house for years. They are not hard to keep clean like they used to be. You can get automatic ones that supposedly clean themselves. Of you can get clumping litter so that you just scoop out the clumps. It was bad when we had no other place to keep the litter box except in our master bath. Kitties scratch litter out all over the place. They also shoot out of the box sometimes, not on purpose but just because they don't aim so well. Then we moved where we could keep them and their box in a sunny laundry room when we weren't home. That worked pretty well. Now, in our new home, they are unfortunately caged in the biggest dog kennel we could find in the basement until my husband gets their own room built. I clean their cage and litter box about every 2 days.

I've never heard of the automatic ones. But I have had to have a litter box in a carpeted room before for lack of other place. Not good. Your lucky kitties are getting their own room. That will keep the smells and sounds and little particles away from everything else.

We had an automatic one for our cat. He somehow managed to break it after about a month. Now we keep a normal litter box in the laundry room for him.

I never had an automatic one. I always thought they were very expensive for something I could take care of myself.

Actually, I would not recommend litter boxes. They are breeding grounds for bacteria and other nasty things. When we built our house, we installed a dryer exhaust pipe through the wall about three inches up from the floor. We put a plyable leather flap over both inside and outside of the openings. It works 'purrrrfectly'. Cats need to run and jump and climb trees. They need fresh (as it gets) air. They need to smell their world. And when they're done, they can just come in. So simple. ...and stink free...

Sound like a great idea, so long as the cats aren't in danger of getting attacked by another animal or hit by a car, or picking up a disease while outside. Unfortunetly, most of us don't live somewhere we can say that is true.

Yes, we keep our litter box in the basement and it's working out just fine. We clean it every 2 days and you can't even smell it.

It is nice to find a room away from the living - for the box.

Should definately have a litter box if you have a cat, especially if the cat is an indoor cat. We ave 2 indoor cats and our litter box is in the bathroom. I thought that woul be the best place to put it since that is where everyone else goes to the bathroom.

It is usually agreed that indoor cats are healthier and live longer than outdoor cats, so I keep my cat inside all the time (I also live on a busy street, so I'm sure he would get smooshed if I let him out, no matter about the stray dogs...) Anyway, since the cat is inside, so is the litterbox. I have usually had the type with the lid on it, which contians the smell some. I clean it about twice a week and it is usually fine. We keep it in the laundry room now, but when I was in a apartment, it was in the kitchen.

Getting a litter box for your cats is really something necessary to keep your house from getting messy. Cats especially the kitties tend to mess around if you won't provide them a litter box and train them to use it. My mom used to have a litter box for out cats and my younger brother or sister cleans them everyday... they actually take turns for that.

Two litter boxes in the basement, and it seems to work out pretty well for the three cats. My daughters ususally do the cleaning, although they do sometimes need to be reminded. The clumpinglitter really helps too. Always good to have something protecting the floor in the area of the litter box.

No, My cats are all outdoor cats. so the only litter box we have in the house is used for Kitty Litter, Cake. I recommend training your cat to go outside when needed it is easier.. and less clean up.. but I guess it depends on the cat, and where you live too. Or even looking up potty training your cat discussion they were talking about training them to use the human toilet... I think I would do that.. - DNatureofDTrain

I have a litter box in my house. It sits in between the living room and the dining room if they are scooped a couple times a day they don't smell. I suggest recycling the plastic bags they give you at the grocery store. I am picky though can't stand that smell, so I don't allow the smell in my house. Yes I would recommend if you have a cat have a litter box, even if they are outdoor cats, put one on the back porch or something.

I've always had a litterbox in the house, and now have two, one in the sunporch and another in the kitchen. My two cats use both, although every so often, one cat will use the sunporch floor to deposit her poo. She does that, though not as often, because she resents my other cat, Columbus. My cats are strictly indoor cats, btw.
