My mom HAS to doodle when she is talking on the telephone. I always thought that was funny when I was a kid. She can't just sit there and have a conversation, she has to have a pen in her hand and she doodles little checker board patterns on the corner of scrap sheets of paper. But lately I have had this realization that I have become my mom. Not necessarily while talking on the phone, because I don't ever talk for long (I don't like it) but I can't just sit and do something like watch tv without having something to do with my hands. If I don't have something handy to do then I will just grab a notebook and doodle. I think it is in my genes. Do you doodle? If so, when and why?

Whenever I'm around a bunch of people talking (i.e when I was in school, when i'm in a meeting, family event) I can't help but sit and doodle. Typically I write words all pretty and grouped together and I draw stars a lot. Sometimes flowers and trees but usually just stars and such. I get very easily distracted. Actually when I'm at work and someones talking to me on the phone half the time I'm tuning them out and reading something on my computer or typing instead because I just can't focus or concentrate on anything too long.

Your doodling sounds pretty. At least you know this distractedness about yourself.

That's a very healthy attitude, my friend.

Thanks. My horrible attention span seems to get worse the older I get, it's a fact I've grown into. It's amazing I can even read books sometimes because half the time I can't even concentrate long enough to know what I'm reading. You've gotta embrace your flaws :)

I am a 'doodler' - and the phone is the time I do it the most. I go crazy if on the phone and can't reach a pen or pencil. One day I resorted to grandson's crayon that was near-by :) Strange thing is I don't doodle anything in particular - I may fill in all the enclosed spaces in whatever printed material is in reach (such as filling in the 'o's) or may draw boxes around words or will make lists. Sometimes I wonder how on earth I'm actually paying attention to the conversation while doing this but I do.

LOL - glad I'm not alone but I did draw the line one day only thing I could find was my black eyeliner. I asked the person on the other end if they could hold on a minute - went and got a pen off the desk.

My mom often had to use the phonebook too. We would get such a kick out of all the doodled on pages. It was fun to pick on her about it.

I've been told to have a doodle by certain people, mainly british, but neither americans nor canadians have ever told me so. I guess it depends on the kind of accent you're used to. Mine sounds more american-canadian because of who i learned english from, os it's logical that brits consider that i have a doodle. Anyway i suppose that understanding each other is what counts, right? :)

wouldn't be able to explain it typically...its associated to the typical american accent, isn't it?

I don't doodle much these days. but I was a doodle addict when I was younger. Now I try to focus on the things I do, and have some other means of distracting myseld when I am bored. But I don't hold any view against doodling. It is not unhealthy at all.

I have a hard time sitting still and doing nothing. I am like you, though, and I do not talk on the phone very much. Posting to myLot, my hands keep busy. I do not often watch TV, it makes me fall asleep. Back about ten years ago I found though, that subconscious writing/doodling was good. I was widowed, and had written to some people in some singles papers. I ended up in a quandry because I had a couple of men interested. One of them that called me a few times, I doodled and just wrote random words while we were on the phone. When I read them later, I knew the answer to my dilemma. He presented himself well. He evidently had some financial means, or said he did. But my notes that I had doodled down were that he was someone who was broken, and I did not want to fix him.I just came up with that at the uh hum, yes, I see stage of the conversation. I ended up dating my husband, and obviously marrying him. Money wise, I am not as set, but feeling wise, and relationship wise, I could be a queen. Some times a doodle, and a scribble can translate to what you are really feeling.

This is a great discussion I do doodle if there is a pen and paper near me. I think sometimes it has to do with nerves and the person we are talking to. Its possible. I dont like talking on the phone alot either. Sometimes while Im on the phone I will pase up and down. Again nerves or maybe I just want to get off the phone.LOL Well happy doodling!

I agree that it has to do with nerves, I have made that connection as well. The person I am the most comfortable talking to and always puts me at ease.... I don't doodle when I am talking to her.

Depends on who I am talking to, I doodle but not all time, if I am bored with the conversation I will.

That is funn because I am just the opposite. The more active the conversation the more I doodle, it seems.

Yes I am a doodler...I have a pencile stuck in my hair and everytime I sit down for a few minutes I doodle. I even doodle while reading or surfing on the 'net. My hands are busy drawing all kinds of stuff...I even draw sad pctures if I am reading about something sad. And happy pictures when reading about happy things. I love to doodle or draw what I feel or see.

i do doodle. Not so much these days with a laptop in front of me but I guess there is no specific time or reason. Trees are my main thing, also animals and abstracts.

Yes, I can't help myself either. I don't know why I do it, but when I am on the phone I have to do doodle drawings. Even if I stop myself while I am on the phone, I will notice a couple of minutes later that I am doing it again.

If there is a pen or pencil and something to write on I will doodle, especially if I am on the phone. I am not really sure why I do, I have done it as long as I can remember. I even remember doodling in school during classes, my notebooks were full of doodles.

Oh, me too. I got a lot more out of lectures when I doodled while listening.

I also doodle while I'm talking to someone, whether on the phone or in person. Even while I am at work, I doodle. I am in a call center and I handle inbound calls. While my customer is talking, I doodle unconsciously. I don't know why I do ths, but one thing is certain, I understand them better when I doodle. Sounds weird? I think so too. Even when I was undergoingtraining, they thought I wasn't paying attention because I kept on doodling. So whenever they would ask me a question, they were surprised because I was able to answer their questions. I think there is nothing wrong in doodling. It helps me kill time when I am bored.
