...rather disturbing. Im not sure how regular this sort of thing happens but this morning I saw a show where a man invited people on to a stage to talk about very personal problems in front of a live audience. One woman was talking about her incestuous relationship, another about her husband and the fact that she was having it away with her lesbian lover. Now my question is this, why do people go on these kind of shows? Why do people watch them? Have you ever been on one, if so why?

I think the organisers of these shows have discovered something that has been known a long time in group therapy - that when you share something personal in public, it gives you a high. This happens with exhibitionists mostly, but can also occur with an introverts if you can persuade them to take that "leap of faith" and share. This was a very useful tool for me in encounter groups (although every member signed to keep the confidence of every other member). They had a safe space in which they would talk about their most intimate hang-ups etc. which was witnessed and often discussed amongst the group. I have had a glimpse of these shows now and again and I have seen people who were obviously actors sharing stuff at times. Otherwise I do not watch them - I have seen it all before and "worse" so to speak in real life. Apart from that,I get the sense that there seems to be a voyeurism that is spreading into the lives of ordinary people who would say a decade or two ago, be not in the least interested. Permissiveness is all very well, but we need to watch that this isn't going to be just another "horse" that is going to take the bit between his teeth and run amok.

as i read your reply I started to think. Are these kind of Exhibitionist television programmes a result of the greater levels of isolation and privatisation in real life. As individualism increases, the need for communal sharing is perhaps fulfilled through this media. Just another example of how we have moved away from notions of community?

yes, i see. War as communal action? well yes why not. I was reading a guy called Norbert Eleise who argued that society, although generally moving forward also has periods of retrogressive development. He calls the decivilizing spurts, where not only do we go against our own nature but also against the stabelising structures we have createt. He sees football hooliganism as a result of this. Also, I would sugexst the telivised ripping open of our souls is also part of this blessed be

Yes, I can agree with this and I think the retro. development is implanted in each and every individual and this might well be related to hypnotic procedures such as propaganda. For instance, there is talk of Orwell's big brother manifesting now - taking his story as symbolic (not so much as physically having spy cameras in everybody's home), I think big brother was already active when he actually wrote 1984 otherwise where did he get his ideas from. I think also is the propagandists themselves hardly know what they are doing, themselves having been subjected to other propaganda. Society was "guided" to think the thoughts of those running it, who thought they weren't running it. So who was the boss? I don't think it was anybody - just "silent hypnotism" stretching back into history the keeps the economy of each nation ticking over. Anybody who questions this system, would be seen a freak and maybe outcast. Then all this complex process seems to be pointing to one thing. A hypnotic suggestion that commands us to - Find a "team" and put your health/life/wealth at risk for it - but whatever you do, don't wake up and realise you are being conned! I think there is a little awareness of this "con" and every now and again, someone sees something and then through the Jungian group consciousness "transmits" it to like-minded persons and what happens.. Violence - destroy the thing that is conning us, problem is it IS us! We are doing it to ourselves. As within, so without. This is what I was trying to put across in a poem I submitted here a while back - I don't know if you read it or not, but here's the URL - http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1109151.aspx And yes, I agree with you that we are manifesting these qualities in our participations of these TV shows.

The only thing I can think kof when I see these shows is that these people are desperate for money. I cannot for the life of me figure out who or why you would air your dirty laundry to the entire world.

I think some ppl who do them dont stop to realize that its nation or world wide..they go on hoping to find help or whatever...SOME however go on for their "15 mins of fame"....Would I ever do it? Naw, no way..I'm very open and honest about my life all the time whether its online or offline but the thought of doing somethng like that just makes my skin crawl...partly becuase of stagefright but also because the thought of the audience drilling me questions because they arent LISTENING to ALL of what i'm saying would just enrage me....I KNOW who I am, where I came from, what I've done/had done to me etc..i dont need a bunch of strangers attempting to pass judgement on me simply becuase they "dont get it" ya know...

i think its disturbing that people choose to share often intimate details with the baying masses. It is a dambing indictment of the human condition that people not only feel the need to expose themselves in this way but also that some very sad individuals watch it blessed be

Private issues should not be discussed in public, especially the personal relationships. People indulge in such cheap things and tag it with openess or modernisation. Civilised men should learn lots from animals.

i rarely see tv and was quite shocked with how many of these sort of programmes are on tv. It looked like the ampitheatre in Rome watching people being ripped apart by wild beasts

Ratings, ratings, and more ratings. It is sick how the twisted lives of others sells so quickly. I guess because it is so out of the norm for most of society that watching it is like shock value. For example, seeing a car wreck is very shocking but most can't turn their eyes away as they see it happen. In my opinion, these people come on the shows for 1) attention and their 15 minutes of fame and/or 2) to express and share lifestyles with others in hopes to try and convince people it is ok. In my book it is NOT ok. I will admit I did watch Jerry Springer way back when it was just about cheating, but when they started bringing in people that slept with horses or cousins dating cousins I never watched again.

No I've never been on one and won't. I believe your personal life should be personal. Others feel like it helps to talk to others. Who knows, it might all be fake so they can get paid just to keep the show on.

Another reason why people could watch these kind of shows is to get clousere that there are people in wears situation that they are in or they are really bored and have nothing to do :).

Frankly speaking, i do not trust these shows. I always doubt that the participants are paid for doing such shows and everything shown there is not true. it is only a money making business. I do not watch such shows now.

Why do people watch them, you ask? Well, why were you watching it? jk jk... maybe it makes people feel better about their own relationships and lives to see how some people have had more troubled lives or something like that. I never watch tv, so I have never seen a show like that. I dont even have cable!
