Rude Salesmen

salesman - The customer is always right, or is this notion changed forever?
July 3, 2007 6:46am CST
hi, Yesterday I went to this rather LARGE bookstore and asked for a particular item for my laptop. NONE of the staff were helpful and they kept saying "we don't have it, we don't have it". One of them said " we don't have what u r looking 4 as this is a bookstore NOT a hardware hanger!!". I doubt they paid any attention 2 me. Well I said "OK" and decided 2 give up. On my way out, I took a glimpse on one of those asorted items they set up next to the cashiers and to my surprise, I found it and in the HUNDREDS! I got pissed off and decided to take up with their supervisor! I yelled and shouted in ANGER & complaint that the staff were so bloody RUDE! they made me circle each and every dept in search of the item for more than 20mins!! And NONE of them had the slightest idea what they were selling or cared about the customer! I just simply wiped the florr with them all and told them how they are a big disgrace to the name tags and uniforms they were wearing!Have you EVER been in my situation? what would you do if u were in my place?

To tell you the truth if you acted as you say you did I would ask yout to leave my store and to never return. Yes you had a reason to be angry for having your time waisted but that is no reason for yu to behave as you say you did. You could have complained with out shouting and and yelling. After all they are just as important as you are. Now your talking about a large book store why would you look for laptop items at a book store. Any way you still didn't have to be rude.

thank u 4 ur honesty. But NO, i had 2b rude. whatever happend to "the customer is laways right"? yet they are important, but this is not the first time THEIR staff were this way, not just with me. I took intense customer service courses throughout my career and i assure u this is no way to treat a customer. There is a reputation to uphold.

I'm just so sorry ma'am. We are not in a situation that we can take the salesman to a corner and asking him for a freindly chat and discuss his/her social probelm. No Ma'am, I can't and WILL NOT tolerate RUDE and nasty people. Especially ones who are their to SERVE. U tolerate it once, u will be tolerating it for the rest of ur life. I will be good with the ones who are good to me.

Hi my dear dear friend Yes I was in a big supermaket where i asked the butcher to provide me with a specific type of meat then when he started 2 prepare the meat chunk for me i told him; would you leave some of the fat on it? he responded a rude and sarcastic way. I did not speak with him i just went 2 his supervisor and complained, and he took care of it. I guess in the past when you visit a shop, people, salesmen or whoever taking care of that place were keen 2 keep you a customer for life. That was the attitude so if they've known you since ages, they treat you in a very special way and offer you special services like special discount sometimes. We had what's called the district culture, where the mini market staff have known you for years, the fruit shop, the butcher, the bread parlor all of them personally recognize you and your family so they really care. Even if you go downtown and visit a shop 4 the first time, shop owner and workers would still treat nice you know why? coz it it was a cultural-like attitude. Nowadays, it doesn't really matter anymore. They lose you ? they lose a customer, they don't fu$%in care, they hundreds and thousands of customers, other than you, not all the places are like that of course but it exists. TO ANSWER UR QUESTION IF I WERE IN YOUR PLACE: Well I guess if i were in ur place i would talk 2 the guy politely if he doesn't respond or if he reacted rudely I would talk 2 his supervisor. I would do my best not 2 raise my voice or yell coz in the people's eyes, i will be the one whos blamed and it isn't good 4 the health as well but it is not easy we all lost temper sometimes. Very interesting post my dear friend.....

Hey. I agree about the part of the district culture thing. MAN things were so different back in the day. we are loosing so many good things that we had in the past. All fading with time. Nowadays, nowadays...i wonder what will change next. Thank you my friend.

Yes I have had to deal with rude sales people and the ones that don't listen to you. I usually just leave and don't come back. I have wanted to say something but didn't. I did email the company headquarters once when I had a bad experience at a restaurant.

hi silver_shaddow !! i had the same experience with yours i remember it happened in singapore long ago we're looking for a wrist watch, and we found the watch we're looking for at a counter.. i remember it was a Swatch counter it was my auntie who wants to buy it she was a little confused and took a little time to pick which credit card to pay the watch.. that's because there was a point rewards for several purchases and guess what the staff said ?? he spoke to his friend next to him in cantonese he said that we don't have any money and he's sure that we're about to cancel out the purchase my auntie can also speak cantonese but she didn't say a word [ at that time we spoke in indonesian, our first language ] but i knew she was very angry from her face expression she just took the watch to the cashier and the staff also came along with us when we were at the cashier, my auntie suddenly spoke cantonese and the staff's face suddenly became pale my auntie just paid the bill and left the cashier actually she was thinking of seeing the store manager and complained, but she changed her mind if i was my auntie, i'd have slapped that staff or at least met the manager who would not be angry with that ? the staff thought we don't speak cantonese so he can mock on us in cantonese !?!? bahh.. anyway, thanks.. ^^

I look and if cannot find it as an employee and if they say they do not have it i leave and even if i see it on the way out i go somewhere else to get it and not go back stores rely on customers for buisness and if they do not wanna help me then i do not wanna support them. And if they are rude to me i jsut leave and never go back and tell people that they are a $hitty buisness and do not deal with them.

Ha Ha!! First off, I love your avatar! secondly, if I am gonna leave that store and not come back, I would cause a stir ANYWAY. They didn't care about me, why should I xtend them the same curtosy?? Thridly, if I EVER do come back, they will make sure I am served and satisfied. U know, sometimes U have 2 FORCE your respect rather than earning it.

I understand that you must have been very upset and you had every right to be. Those clerks were very rude and clearly weren't doing their job. I would have also been very upset and I would have reported to the supervisor. I wouldn't yell and scream about it though. I find that being gracious with people, even when I am complaining, gets them to take me more seriously and often times, I am offered an apology or something of value to compensate me for my trouble. Once they realize that they might have a blot on their reputation or that they may lose money from losing customers, they set the wrong to right. If not, then I wouldn't shop there any more. There are plenty of bookstores around, so much so, that they are going out of business little by little because people would rather stay home and shop online.

I don,t remember if that ever happen to me. But I work in a kind of Home depot here in Canada (Reno depot) and every time I help a customer, they tell me about other staff in the store that are not like me, that doesnt care of helping them, etc. The other day, a woman said to me that she will not come buying paint in our store anymore, but she still will come to my departement. I feel bad about our store when I hear story like that. Customer are important and you are there to help them. At least they are happy after I help them and I know that they will come back because of me :P

Hey thanx 4 the response and for being so helpful in real life and on myLot :P Yes it's very important to keep some sort of a professional relationship between the customers and sales persons.

These people don't have this job as a career so there is no use in shouting at them cos they genuinellly do not care. If you have that big a complaint you should have quietly left the store and wrote a letter to head office saying the need to be more particular about who they hire. You sound liek you came off as a bit of a d*ck.
5 Jul 07
a d*ck with a hard on baby!! am just so sick of being nice and people mistake it for weakness. I have very LOW tolerance for rude people @ the moment. I am so charged up and will give back @ anytime.

Heeey, I faced the same with a restaurant, the salesmen were so rude and I asked them to talk to their supervisor then one of them waved with hand as if he was saying shut up and leave... I actually felt so angry and never went to that restaurant again... Salesmen should attend a customer service course before starting selling.. But unfortunately not many companies/organizations care...

hi hi hi, ;) Well U didn't gain ANYTHING form just dropping and leaving. U see when u left harmlessly, U gave them NOTHING to sort or think about. I bet the treated the next customer the same way they did U. the next time u face something like this, DON'T DROP ur right to SPEAK UP. Appreciate and value ur response.

Hi Friend, I am replying to this even after reading the reply you have given to the first responder. If you had a bad experience with that store previously you should not have gone there again, because again going there means you are aware about the performance of the stafs & ready to bear it. so if you are not happy with the support given by that store i think you must change to another store ( If possible) .And if that is the only store available then sorry it is their monpoly we have to bear. but you have got all the right to report it to the authorities.
5 Jul 07
Hi, I disagree with u. it IS the only store available in my district. And there is no way am gonna have my arm twisted JUST BECAUSE OF THAT.

It is not right for salesman to be rude or ignorant. They should try to help the customers as much as they can. If they are not aware of a particular product then they should ask their other staff about the product and this way they can help you out. But, what they did is completely wrong and if I were in your place I would have let them known this or spoke to the manager. I don't know if I would yell at them or not. They wasted your time inspite of helping you out. May be you have a genuine reason to do that.
5 Jul 07
I thank you for understanding. I yelled because I was so angered and pissed off, Because I did go through all the different depts and met each main salesman there. They all acted rude and careless.

You did the right thing! I will do the same as u did.. I will let them feel how important the customer is... But just a reminder dont speak to much...also coz maybe they have some reasons why the act like that to you.
5 Jul 07
I don't usually act like this. Infact, I think a thousand times before I explode like I did. This time I had a reason and a ver STRONG motivation. Cuz this wasn't the first time this sort of thing happend from them.

Hellos, If it were me in your situation, I would have just walked out peacefully and find another place to buy my stuff, if I do not urgently require it. Why lose your cool and spoil your day just because of a few rude people? True, they are unprofessional and a disgrace to their store, but that has nothing to do with me, they are just driving business away from themselves. Vote with your wallet, thats your right as a consumer =)

hey, you know what ive experience that kind of treatment from a saleslady at a department store i was asking for the make up and the saleslady didnt even bother to look at what im asking for im so pissed off then i ask another saleslady she's not that nice but she did mind me and assist me to what i need i really hate them i wanted to call their supervisor to talk to them or call for their attention and make a scandalous scene but i think that i would give them another chance and nxt tyme if they will still snob me i will do some actions already so they will know how to respect a consumer...

oh, i'm quite sure i would have reacted much like yourself. if the staff had any pride in there work, they would know what they sell. who stocks the shelves? even the cashiers get a chance to wander around the registers (which is where you said you found your item, correct?) and see what the stock is and if it needs to be filled. i hate stores that tolerate such behavior and i usually let them know it. now, is that the right way to do it? make a scene? probably not...NO. but it is my way. congrats to you for calling on these "workers" to work.
