would you rather pay in cash or in installment?

my friend is going to buy a cellphone coz he just lost his old one. he's thinking of availing of the promo where you can buy a cellphone and pay it on an installment basis (its not on plan). i told him he should just get one and pay it in cash since he's planning to buy a not so expensive model. he said his budget cant afford it. but i know he can remedy that. i told him paying in cash is much more convenient than paying in installment where every month (for a year) he has to take an amount from his budget. what do you think?

When I buy stuff, I have always preferred to pay in cash or credit card in one go. I will go to the store with my budget and pay for it right there, so I don't have to worry about it all the time. But I am not sure if your friend's plan would be on a no interest installment, if it is, then it's still fine. But if there is any interest, I don't think it's worthed it at all. And you are right, buying an inexpensive phone with an installment seems a bit not worth it for me. Like what if he loses it again while he is paying for that installment? It wouldn't be very nice to pay for something which is already not there!

actually, that what has happened to him. he lost his cellphone and he havent finished paying for it yet. he still has a large credit on his shoulders. ^__^;; that's why im strongly advising him to just get that cheap fone in cash! its impractical to be paying for it for a year while he can pay it in cash. right??? ^__^;;

I feel that when im paying for things in installments its easier for me, because it feels like im paying less for it...even though Im not. Because I hate spending so much money all at once, I'd rather have small monhly bills

I hate spending money all at once too but if its not that big, its ok for me. i'd rather spend once than spend for a longer period of time. I don't like it when I have to pay for something every month. that's why I avoid credits. ^__^

I would just rather pay in cash and get it over and done with , that way you dont have to worry about it each month, what a hassle.

As long as there is no interest involved, I don't see a problem with paying on an installment. Just be sure there are no hidden costs, etc.

I think it's always better to pay in cash than in installments. Many people get tempted to pay in installments thinking that they only have to pay a fixed small amount every month. They don't realise that they are also paying a high interest rate. I would say you should buy any product or shop only if you can afford it in your budget. At times people go overboard by buying many things on installments and then they end up in a financial mess when they are not able to pay the amount. Not only do they end up losing on the things they have purchased but also end up losing their reputation. So friends always remember never buy anything on installment. Only buy things that you can afford or which is within your budget.

yeah. sometimes those installment plans are really misleading. they make you believe it is better than paying in cash but in truth, its not. however, I think installments are good only if you're buying very expensive materials or items like furnitures or a house or a car. but in my friend's case, I really think that its better to pay in cash. the model is not that expensive anyway. its actually kinda cheap. ^__^

For me I will try not to pay in installments as long as I can avoid it. Small things like handphones should not be bought in installments. Only big things like cars and house can be paid in installments. Like now I do not have any debts to pay regarding my home furniture, hand phone, computer or television. I bought them all in cash. I used to save money in my piggy bank and when the money is enough only I go and buy those things.

I think so too. installments are good for very expensive and big items like what you said. I also bought my cellphone in cash coz I don't want any monthly bills. I save too if I don't have the enough money yet. but I don't have a piggy bank. LOL but I want to have one even before, I just couldn't find one that I really like. ^__^

I would say the installment plan. You do not know what else he has to use the cash for. You assume that he probably has no worries and that if he plunked down, lets say, $150, on a cellphone, there would be no big deal. But let us suppose he is also planning to buy a $20 shirt or he needs to get his apartment painted? So he wants to pay $10 a month on the cellphone, and by doing so, he can afford to get what he needs with the rest instead of having to make do and how would it feel if because he put down the whole $150 on the cellphone, he could not get his radio fixed, or his apartment painted, or could not get the plumber in to look at the sink? With an installment plan, he has a record and if there were a problem, then he could easily get it fixed. With paying all in cash, if something went wrong, there would be a problem.

Then he has to keep the receipt and make a copy of it so he has proof that he actually purchased it. When I bought my cellphone, I recorded the information on my computer. I also have the original bill in my file cabinet. I also have a Cd with that information and I can upload the information to another server.

he kept the receipt of his previous cellphone, even the box and all the papers that came with it. when he lost his cellphone, he went to the national telecommunications where they blocked the cellphone so that whoever snatched it, wouldn't be able to use it. nonetheless, its the only thing he could do, that didn't made his debts disappear. he still has to pay for it. ^__^;;

Personally, I would rather pay the cash up front and get it over with. This way I wouldn't have to worry about paying this bill later on. Of course, if there were no interest, I might be able to better use the money for other things right now. I guess it would depend on whether or not I could spare the money to pay it up front. If so, that is what I would rather do as long as I knew I could afford to do it.

I would definitely read all of the fine print carefully before getting into the installment plan. There usually are some sort of extra charges with any type of installment plan.

I think so too. they are just saying that it has a 0% interest but in truth, there still something there that has to be paid aside from the actual amount.

he said there's no interest if its on installment. but we're not sure about that. and we dont if it has hidden costs or anything. 0% interest is a very suspicious offer. ^.^

Most times i pay in cash and if my financial postition and the thing to be purchased requires huge money i buy in instalment scheme.I know its better to buy in cash rather than in instalment purchase because while payng in easy instalment we need to pay certain interest to the bank or financial institution which lends us money and the amount to be paid in buying the product gets increased too.

it is always wise to buy cheap things in cash. why would we burden ourselves with interests if we could pay it in just one time right? installment is better if the item to be purchased is very expensive. ^__^

Yeh it will be very wise to pay in installment rather by casy. coz it will remove lot of burden.You can also pay by credit card coz you don't have to to bear all those paper works in shop.so go and get it.

I prefer to pay in cash... But it really depends on the budget. If you are hard on cash at the moment then it is practical to pay on installments but if you have extra money, just get it over and pay it in cash.

he has no extra money at the moment but he can produce the amount he needs in just a matter of a month or two. he could wait and then buy the mobile in cash. right...?

Sorry for the late response. I have been out of town. Anyway, if your friend can wait until he can pay the item in cash, then so much the better. :) Paying the item in cash is more convenient and easier than paying the item on installments.

I'd rather pay in cash. Partly because then I know it's been already paid and I don't have to worry about it. Partly because if there's an interest, the thing I bought might end up costing me much more than if I had paid in cash.

that is what im telling him. if he pays it in cash then there's no monthly bills to worry about after that. and the price is not that big, he can produce the money needed in just a month.

If he can do that, then I really see no reason for him to pay in installment.

depends on interest. if interest is only slightly higher than inflation rate, pay using installments. if not try to pay by cash. ofcourse all depends on whether you need the cash for any other important thing which could be of higher interest.

I don't like buying things on installments. I always feel like owing money to someone... If I don't have the money I save it and wait until I have enough...

that's a smart thing to do. i usually do that too when i want something i cant buy immediately. saving is just a matter of discipline and if you have that, you can have all the things you want. right? ^__^

I never pay in installment. If I want to buy something, i do do not have enough money. I will give up the idea until I have enough cash. The reason for me to do it like this is I do not want to live under heavy burden.

Paying in cash or full is the best thing to do in buying almost everything, it will be interest free and you are going to enjoy the best days of your life, while using the things you bought with cash.. it is really a peace of mind.. :)

installment is an easy way of paying if you really cant afford to pay it in cash. im going to get a new phone through this way on saturday. although, i have enough savings, im going to give part of it to my parents and the rest would be for my baby's bank savings which im planning to open as soon as i can. paying a minimum amount mnthly would surely be easy for me as my salary is well budgeted for my needs, my baby's and for our savings. a small dent in my savings wouldnt hurt.

i think that's the wise way of spending money for a person who has many responsibilities like children, wife/husband, parents. For a single person like me, and with a job that's not permanent, i think its better to spend in cash. or if i want stuff that's too expensive, i'll save money first and if i have the enough amount, that's the only time i'll buy that stuff. ^__^

If he can pay in cash then do it, instead of worrying every month for the payment. You never know what might happen you might lose your job or have some big expenses. Less worries is always good.

my parents hate paying through credit cards. and i inherited it, i mean, what i think about paying in terms is that, its not practical, why? because of the interests that adds up to your balance, instead to buying something else, you have to spend your money for paying interest.

yeah. instead of paying the interest, you could just use that money to buy other stuffs. oh hey, my friend bought the mobile in cash. ^__^ i won. LOL good thing he realized what i meant. another good thing he followed my advice. yey! ^__^
