What's the deal with Scientology?

I've read a little about Scientology, and I'm trying to understand how this is a "religion." It seems more like a psychology method or self-improvement course. Would love to hear from anyone who has experience with Scientology. Thanks!

hi! i don't have any experience with Scientology, but i did pick up a leaflet from a fair a few weeks ago about Dianetics by L.Ron Hubbard (he started it all in the 50's )something about how to free the 'reactive mind.' as far as i know Scientology is a lot to do with past lives and the subconscious. you can free negative energy over the course of many life times by their therapy.

My opinion is that it's really a philosophy dressed up as a religion or faith. My simple understanding is that it is a philosophy that basically believes in wealth and health as indicators of success. This is why presumably so many stars are interested, it's because they already have the wealth and are really looking for the meaning behind that success. If you say to someone who has 'made it' in worldly terms, that they are successful because they have the right attitudes and philosophy, that is a very attractive and flattering introduction to the 'faith' for them (as opposed to 'hey, you got lucky!' which is not so flattering). For the people who want 'success', they think that they can have health and wealth if they pursue the philosophy. IMHO, neither wealth or even health are that important in the great scheme of things. In an eternity, why would it matter if you were healthy for the short time that you inhabit earth? and it sure doesn't matter how much money you made!

I don't know anyone that belongs to this so called religion it just adds to my theory that religions are just books, rules and whatever made by ordinary people many years ago, they all can't be right as their written words are all so different, I think people should really do some hard thinking about these books and rules and maybe just listen to their inner thoughts, be kinf to one another and just try and be happy in the life we have been given and then maybe when we depart from this life we will find out what it is all about..

It is not a religion. Nice and simple. This is a joke. It was made off of a bet. He said that religion is where the moneys at. Just to let you know. You will never see a true scientologist if I spelled it right, this is because it is very secretive. People rarely leave scientology because they put a major part of their money (300-400k) to become saved from evil lord xenu.
