What breed of dog should I get?

July 9, 2007 3:05pm CST
Hey guys. I want to get a dog, and I know a lot about them but I still have no idea what breed of dog to get. I don't mind if it's long-haired or short-haired, huge or small, high or low maintenance. I just want a good-tempered dog! Can anyone tell me about their experiences with dogs? What breeds are good and which to avoid? x

There are that many dogs out there, you might need to narroe it down a bit..there is a website (Petnet I think) that you can fill out a form about your lifestyle and it comes back with the breeds that would suit you.

Well you must have some other criteria besides a good temperament? How about shedding? Are you meticulous about your house? Or does hair on the furniture not bother you? Are you active? Do you out out running a lot, or is a quiet little walk to the store every few nights more your pace? How much exercise can you give a dog? Do you have a yard? A house or an apartment? What's the climate like where you live? Will the dog be faced with more hot or cold weather, or is it fairly temperate? How do you feel about dogs that bark? Or do you want a quiet breed? Do you have kids? Cats? Do you want a sedentary breed that will sit at your feet while you quietly read a book, or a dog that will always want to play? A dog that's best friends with everyone, or your loyal companion? I'd suggest looking for 'dog breed selectors' like this one: http://animal.discovery.com/breedselector/dogselectorindex.do Then you have something to go on and search researching breeds.
