I have 2 dogs, whom I love very much. I feed them plenty of food everyday. Rosie (min-pin) and Ming (chow) get both dry and canned. They even get the occasional table scrap. They get plenty of water. Here are my questions: So why do they find it necessary to eat cat crap out of the cat litter box? Is just me or is this just totally unnecessary and disgusting?????????

Don't feel bad, mine do it to. I was once told that they do it because the cats food tastes better than theirs even after it has been digested and deposited in the liter box. I am not sure about that but it does make sense. I agree, its disgusting.

I have caught my dogs eating grass and dirt too. Why they do eat these things, only they know but don't be surprized by anything they eat. Some one told me that they eat grass when they have an upset tummy, and the dirt may have mineral that they need. My guess is that it is part of nature's way of keeping them healthy.

Dogs eat grasses when they are not getting a proper diet from their dry food. Try to switch to a healthier product with more meats and vegetables in the ingredients list, and not filled with fillers.

Dogs like to eat disgusting things. One of my dogs likes to eat slugs and worms. I do my best to stop her doing this. Once I was walking along a footpath and she ate a sandwich that someone had dropped. I told her no and a builder working on a house roof said I was too late. My other dog loves to roll in fox mess. It really stinks and he has to have a bath. He even tries to eat some of it. Both my dogs love to eat horse manure. They are well fed with dog food but I still have to stop them getting anything unsuitable to eat.

Your dogs are lacking an important mineral, or vitamin in their diet. Change their dog food till you find one that stops them from eating out of the cat's litter box. Do they get outside exercise? Can they ever run loose? have you seen them eating grass? Sometimes a dog who is lacking in diet will eat grass or other greens. Do they ever get a chance to lick some salt? Lack of salt will cause a deficiency in their diet. Try different diets for your dogs. A Healthy well fed and happy dog does not eat cat shite!

Whether this is disgusting or not, only dogs can judge. We are inclined to see them through our human eyes and expect them to behave like humans do, but they are DOGS!, there axiomatic scale is an entirely different one. Still, as we live together, they have to learn to adapt themselves in some measure to our tastes. So I'd suggest you show them your disapproval in a tranquil but firm way, the same as you showed disapproval when getting them to let their digestion products outside the house. This may take some time, but finally they will prefer to please you, that also is dog's behavior. Please, don't love them less because of your disgust. This they couldn't understand and would suffer a lot.

Some dogs do this because they do not like the smell and are trying to HIDE it from you. There are all sorts of things to try-- but what I found works best was to simply get a top entering litter box and a hooded one.

There's no way to really stop them from doing this. I have a min pin too. Common....does he ever stop moving or doing things? :P The best thing to do is to teach your pups the "Leave ot" and "drop it" command. This has worked great on my little pup. And I agree with the above poster...we can't look at it through human eyes, as he is a dog.

You should take him to the Vet as soon as possible! You know, my dog used to eat his own crap. He used to wake up in the middle of the night, and go there. My mother punished him for doing that, and he clearly understood that it was wrong. Still, he kept doing it. It is not a common thing, no matter what people say it isn't that common. We took my dog to the Vet. She did some exams on him, and he was with Geardia. I don't know if that's the way you write, I just know that it is like a worm, which makes the dog want to eat crap. Maybe if you take your dogs to the Vet, they'll get their problem solved.
