Has anyone out here tried their hands at photographing birds? I've done a bit of photography but just started trying to photograph some birds. I'm using a digital camera and it's not equipped well with a long focal length lens or a great zoom. So I'm trying with home bird feeders to catch a few images while being rather near to photograph them. Here is one that I caught of a hummingbird today. It has areas that need to be improved. It could have been sharper and the contrast was to much in the midday sun. Well let me know what you think of this shot.

I love to photograph birds. But, it's hard for me as a photographer to do so because i don't have telephoto lens. My trick is to get a little close to the brid/animal. Take 1 or 2 shots, then take a step or 2 closer, and take 1-2 more shots. repeat until the animal leaves. That way, you have lots of shots and the closest possible shot. This is also good because the animal will figure that you are not harmful, seeing that you are moving very slowly. This works with my cat. I did an experiment where i take a few steps close to him when hes looking outside on our prch. when he turn his head, i stop. Then when he looks back outside, i start walking again. This works because cats don't recognize still objects very well. But, they recognize movement very well. If you only move when the animal is not looking, or you move VERY slowly, I'm sure you'll be able to get very close. Ennjoy this tip! -----Go Phototgraphy!-----

Thanks every tip helps! Every idea is another possibility and I'm the kind of person that likes to improvise, adapt and overcome any limitations I may have so I will give that one a shot. Right now I find a spot and wait that can be a long process but it may pay off too. However, those birds are a bit smarter than they look:) I had the hummingbird buzz me a few times yesterday. I think I will post another image on the flower/bug side here shortly. The digital I have even though not an SLR, like I wanted but not in the budget for now, has a pretty nice macro for the price of the camera. Thanks again...

Well it's very easy to see that you are not using the best equipment, but still, you got a pretty good picture there. Nice for a beginner :-)

Stork - A picture of a stork taken during a fishing trip.
The bird came out ok but the sun did affect the photo, try to use the manual mode, if your camera has this feature. In would have been interesting to see the full resolution photo. I also enjoy taking pictures of birds, let me share a crop of one with a stork that i've taken during a fishing trip a few weeks ago. Keep up the good work.

I am very impressed. I have not been able to get a good picture of a hummingbird! And that one has pretty colors. I thing you did a great job in the focus and clarity. It may be slightly overexposed, but not by much!
