We should be more careful with these things, they may be a little everyday but the long term effects could be very harmful and fatal.

People use MSG for cooking still? Wow, that elicited a "does not compute" for me. I don't use it to cook, never have.

I didn't know until recently that people ever used it in cooking at home. I thought it was a mass-production and Chinese restaurant thing only. I didn't even know you could buy it in the grocery store! My parents never cooked with it, and to the best of my knowledge, none of my friends parents ever did either. My dad has a slight allergy to it, so when we went out to eat when I was growing up, we always made an effort to avoid it. The habit stuck with me. I only recently found out people used it at home when I was browsing the spice shelf at the store for something and I saw a huge bag of MSG sitting on the shelf! I had to stare at it a while for it to sink in. LOL! So nope. I don't use it in cooking. I've never used it in my cooking. I never will either. There are far many more natural ways to enhance the flavor of food (salt, sugar, herbs, spices, etc).

Well, here in the PHilippines almost all households have this on their food and they use it to make food more yummy. I have tried using sugar but I still long for the msg enhancing power. But i have to get rid of it for my own.

Mom uses MSG for seasoning. Our food tastes good and we don't have problems with that.

These are the effects og msg that I have researched I hope we could stop using msg for our own good. Because MSG is absorbed very quickly in the gastrointestinal tract (unlike glutamic acid-containing proteins in foods), MSG could spike blood plasma levels of glutamate.[9][10][11] Glutamic acid is in a class of chemicals known as excitotoxins, high levels of which have been shown in animal studies to cause damage to areas of the brain unprotected by the blood-brain barrier and that a variety of chronic diseases can arise out of this neurotoxicity.[12][13] The debate among scientists on the significance of these findings has been raging since the early 1970s, when Dr. John Olney found that high levels of glutamic acid caused damage to the brains of infant mice.[14] The debate is complex and has focused on several areas: Whether the increase in plasma glutamate levels from typical ingestion levels of MSG is enough to cause neurotoxicity in one dose or over time. Whether humans are susceptible to the neurotoxicity from glutamic acid seen in some animal experiments. It is known that the glutamate ion is important in memory retrieval in humans. Whether neurotoxicity from excitotoxins is caused by the combined effect of glutamic acid and other excitotoxins such as aspartic acid from aspartame.

Nope, good thing we never really got used to using MSG. At home, my father is the one in charge of the kitchen. He cooks pretty well and his cooking is delicious without the help of monosodium glutamate.

whenever we can avoid it, we don't use it. it depends on who's cooking. we have family members who don't use it, we have ones who use a little. but definitely it's a reduced usage. especially when we are cooking food for my then sick aunt (she passed away). we were so conscious of what her food intake is so no msg for her. =)

we still use MSG for our seasoning but only a little. we don't use too much because it is unhealthy. we just use it to add taste to the food. that's all.

Well, my suggestion is to stop using it totally. Coz if not we will suffer the unhealthy effects of it.

My mother only cooked with the MSG for a short time before she noticed that she would get bad headaches every time she ate anything that she cooked using the MSG. She stopped using it once she figured this out. Because of this, I have never cooked with this since that time.

Its best to stop than to suffer from headaches, though we still have not reached that far but we never waited for it. Sugar is a good alternative than using the harmful msg.

Please read this article that I have researched about msg. I hope this could help. In my home we have stopped using MSG long time ago. My mum does use the vegetarian version of MSG. As for me, I do not use any seasoning at all in any cooking. I take food in their natural taste. Taste bland yes, but I am used to it.

I remember that my mom used MSG or vetsin in local term whenever she cooks. When I read that MSG has some health bad effects, I dont use it anymore when I am cooking. However, when we eat in restaurants, we dont know that what we're eating has some MS on it. Also some food enhancers like oyster sauce also contains MSG, and fast cooking aids like the ginisa mix, etc. So whether we like it or not, we tend to still had some intake of it.

I get violent and potentially life-threatening reactions to MSG, where I suddenly collapse and become violently ill, with very little or no warning before collapsing to the ground like a rag doll and vomiting profusely. I eat and drink certified-organic to avoid it completely. I won't touch that stuff, and I recommend that others avoid it like the plague.

If I make lumpia, I add msg. The recipe I have calls for it. I use it. I've never had a bad reaction to msg. If I make it for my son I might change it, but right now he won't touch lumpia anyway. So I'm good.

Yah it's true that msg is bad to our health, and i also uses a bit of sugar instead of msg when i cooks. I just hope that others will stop using msg too.
