Enough Space Where You Live?

When I moved into the apartment that I now have, I had to do some serious downsizing. I like to have a lot of "things." I need space for my books, my magazines, my figurines, video and stereo equipment...the list goes on and on. I am still finding it hard to manage to fit everything that I want into such a small space. My doll collection is now scattered all over my apartment. Do you have enough space where you live or could you use more?

Yes, Feona, I know the drill-you get rid of some and replace it with something else, LOL.

I manage to accumulate so many books, weemam, and it seems that no matter how many I get rid of, they just pile up again. Reminds me of a story I read sometime ago about the woman who loved books so much that they overflowed into her kitchen. Oh, wait, I think that's me, LOL.

With my growing family we are running out of space where we currently live. My children have taken over the place. We also have this enormous entertainment center that is great but it a bit to big for my living room. I would love to have more space in a home and outside.

I have thought of getting rid of mine too but everytime I say something the hubby says he wants to keep it. I mean this this is taller than me and is over 6 feet long. I like it but sometimes I just feel we could use either a smaller one or a bigger place. I would rather have the latter.

Sounds like the problem I have with the entertainment center, jmcafam. I have thought more than once that I should get rid of mine, but where would I put all the stuff I have in there currently? I'm still trying to figure out a solution to this problem.

I think that no matter how much space that you have, you could always do with some more..IMy house is quite large but at times I wish it was bigger to put some things away in places..

I'm just the opposite, Calais. I don't like a lot of space, but I just have too much stuff for the little place that I have. Something has to give.

I hear ya. My stuff fit okay in my apartment with no extra space, and then I got married. And I got lots of gifts and all my husband's stuff crammed into my one bedroom apartment. Now we are constantly tripping over stuff and counting the days until we can afford to move into a house.

I sincerely hope that day will come for you soon, Aurone. There is nothing worse than tripping over all the clutter just to get from point A to point B.

I live in a one bedroom apartment and I also have collected a lot of stuff that seems to be crowding my space. So what I did was to really plod through all of them and got rid of those things that I no longer use. Most of the things that went to the trashcan are my decorative items, figurines, scented candles, and other small items that collectively took space. When I got rid of them, I breathed a little easier.

Yeah, mari, but didn't it make you feel a tiny bit sad to have to get rid of your things like that? Maybe I form too much of anattachment to my things.

We actually have too much wasted space as half of the apartment does not get used much (except the other bathroom). However it seems I have accumulated a lot of furniture just over a year and finding it hard to fit it all in. In the new year we are actually looking for a cheaper apartment and it may be a little smaller. I may have to get rid of some of what I have now, but we shall see.

I don't think there is such a thing as having enough space! lol I love where I live as I have great neighbours and am very close to the youngests school but I wish I could double the size of my house - even then I think I would like more space - and I don't have any collections! xxx

I think whatever size home I live in I manage to fill it with my things. My sister used to live in a small apartment and now she lives in a 5 bedroom house she still doesn't have enough space. I struggle to fit things in my lounge. I bought some nice sized plastic boxes that fit in my drawers and cupboards. I am very keen on traveling and I have a collection of costume dolls from around the world. They used to be in a narrow cabinet but as the number of them grows I need to move them somewhere else. I agree that it can be challenging to display a collection. Books look lovely on a book shelf, magazines can go in wooden folders and videos can go in boxes. Your doll collection might look nice in a glass display unit. Good luck.

We need more. We live in a 3 bedroom and I don't have a walk-in cloest in my room which I hate. Then the bathrooms don't have linen cloests so I have to put my towels somewhere else. There is no hall cloest for coats so they are stuffed in everyones cloest the vaccum cleaner doesn't have a place so it sits out near my bathroom door. My socks and underwear are in the bedside table and is very hard to close. Our shed is over flowing. our backyard is filled with toys and our oldest is only 2. We still want to get a swingset for the kids but I don't think we will have enough room. Nice topic

Sounds like you're in a boat that's a bit overcrowded, mflower. It will probably get worse as the children grow. Sometimes it helps to get rid of some of the things that you absolutely can do without.

I don't think (except the really rich) can enough space. I have a crafts room but it has a lot of my girlfriends crafts stuff in there so that when I get out of my chair I cannot push it back too far or I will knock her stuff over. In the garage I am building a fish room but the garage is about 60 to 65^ filled with her stuff and so I have to make do with a lot less room there (when I finish) as I really should have. She says that I can make it larger when she moves her stuff out of the way. That will not work because I am going to be building walls with wires and everything so it will not be easy to enlarge it plus we are intending to move with n two or three years. Oh yes, I am renting a storage unit to keep aquariums and other things in for my fish room until I get it finished.

Sounds like you really have your work cut out for you, oscarbartoni. Guess you'll just have to make do until you move in a couple of years. And you're right about the rich. If they can't fit it all into one house, they can always move it to one of the other homes that they own.

Actually my apartment is nice and roomy and uncluttered...you can't believe all the stuff I've gotten rid of over the years...Like the way it sounds with you, my place was wall to wall, floor to ceiling "stuff"---not junk by any means, just a lot of stuff, that one collects over the years....It wasn't until my mother passed away though that I did a real thorough cleaning out too, of the two closets I have...I couldn't believe the stuff I was able to chuck out, it was like, why was I keeping all this stuff anyway?...and for the first time in years I can actually see the bottom of both closets! LOL Isn't unbelievable what one can collect over the years though??

Well, when mine gets too bad, pyewacket, my youngest daughter comes over and lets me know by offering to clean out closets, pantries, etc. She really helps out a lot. I just get so attached to my things that I don't want to part with them.

Hi there. Yes we do have alot of space in and around our house, we have a huge house on a huge section, with a big spare bedroom not in use, there is loads of cupboard space as well as room space, accept for in our bedroom, where we have alot of things, that really could go into our spare room, to free space in our room...

At the moment our apartment is very crowded, since my father-in-law still has a lot of his things here. As soon as those are gone I think we will have enough room for a while, but since both me and my fianceƩ enjoy our things and collect a lot of them I doubt that it will last very long. XD Planning for storage is really important, but you can only do so much.

Space, place and paroxysm - THe picture is relfecting the theme of the discussion!
Well, I think that one has to learn to create A SPACE for him/herself at any place: The question is related to us, not the space itself! Secondly, what ever we want to put our things is not a space, its a place! The real space is really different!

LOLOLOL When I first moved into our present home I thought I had so much room, so many nice storage spaces----------- but after 15 years we have managed to fill it to bursting point. Both hubby and I are packrats, we like our stuff. I am actually in the [very slow] process of sorting things out, and [gasp] getting rid of them. My aim is to get this clutter down to a managable size, where I can actually keep it clean.

I have to say that we seem to have enough room at the moment, except for my four year old son's toys! Geez, I don't know where they all come from, and they're often spread over the whole lounge room until he gets told to tidy them up! Now, if you ask about the shed, I could do with a bigger one, that is on area that I don't seem to have enough room!

We are renting 2 bedroom house, and yes it is quite small and I had to rent a storage unit to house most of my stuff. Like you, I have alot of things from both sets of grandparents, furniture and stuff. I also like to collect trinkets and shadow boxes. I don't really like the house because it is so small, but we are planning on looking to buy a house in December. I guess that when we do look, I need to make sure that there will be room for everything I have or else I will be in trouble!

the answer is 'no' for the most of us. in a big city is very hard to have enough space to live. the apartments are so small for our wishes. i have 3 rooms but i have so many things that i need and i would want more space for them. computer, tv, many books, bed etc.
