High cost MEDICAL CARE: A partial solution

United States

Recently, WAL-MART instituted a policy of a flat fee of $4/month for several hundred common generic drugs useful in the treatment of almost anything except exotic diseases. In combination with using Nurse Practioners and/or Physicians Assistants in states where these professionals are allowed to write prescriptions, this is a big step in reducing overall everyday health care costs. Now, something has come along that lowers the big ticket high cost serious medical procedure (operation) cost. Ever hear of "medical tourism"? Put medical tourism in the myLot search engine to search the web. You will be amazed at what you will learn. You can easily travel to several places in the world where top notch highly qualified doctors will do your operation for a fraction of the cost in the USA. People have been happy with the results, too. So, do the search, read a little and tell us what do you think of medical tourism?

I told my mtoher about this the other day after you had replied to your other topic about it and she is suppose to be checking into it this week. She has some of the same problems you have so I am hoping this weill be somewhat of a relief since hse seems to be struggling even harder since all the great changes of switching the senior citizens over to private insurance plans.

I hope things work out better for your mother. Probably the biggest problem concerning high cost prescriptions is that some doctors do not realize the difference in costs of different sources of medicine. What WAL-MART did is actually incredible. There are now generic versions of some really effective medicines. They have done more to help with the high cost of medicine than the government and they are going to make money on it. I don't begrudge them any money they make on this. I hope they make a few more billion.

Medical tourism is great, it allows you to escape the governmental restrictions and go to a place where the laws of supply and demand actually apply to the medical field. (Fraid I didn't have to wait for you to tell me about it, though. I do a lot of reading.)

Yes, whenever mere humans try to mess with natural laws like supply and demand we creates a mess. Eventually the situation always returns to normal. It is impossible to permanently eliminate competition, supply, and demand. Besides medical tourism, what other neat things have you read about? Inquiring myLot minds want to know. Bet you have some great threads just waiting to brust onto the myLot scene.
