Fatal Extraction

I've had really bad toothache all weekend and it's one of my top molars giving me agony! Even the strong painkillers lost the battle! The last thing I wanted was to have pain on my retreat! So thankfully I managed to get an emergency appointment today! The dentist asked me if I wanted a root filling and crown or extraction! Easy choice, the less painful and easier option! Extraction! But do you think the little sod would come out? No matter how hard he pulled with his pliers and no matter how much drilling he did, the tooth wasn't coming out without a fight! I had to sit in the waiting room and let a few patients go in before he had another go at it. He took an x-ray of it and the root was well into my jaw! Well it was like a story from the Great Turnip, he tugged and he tugged and he tugged, and eventually one part of the tooth was out. It was like a comedy script. You alright Brian he kept asking! Well it took an HOUR for that damn tooth to come out, he said to me if he had known he would have gone for the canal root filling option! The gap is not visible, otherwise he wouldn't have extracted it but now there is a hole! LOL! But at least the pain is not as bad, I've got antibiotics and I can't eat on it for a while and I've got to rinse with salt and water and it should have healed in 5 days! Hopefully! So there's my adventure for today! Just to say this is my last discussion before I go away tonight! 16 weeks of waiting is over, I'm off to my beloved retreat. I'm stopping off at my parents a few days first to drop some stuff off then leave for 10 days on Friday! So thank you my friends for all your support and I will miss you all lots xxxxx

Oh man I was reading this with one eye closed and the other half opened, just waiting for you to say the roots were wrapped around your jaw bone. That happened to a freind of mine once, while I don't know how they took care of it, I do know her face was bruised somthing terrible and they had to put her to sleep to get it done. I am glad your tooth was not that bad and it sounds like a happy ending.

Just some quick advice- make sure you take asprin and advil with you- always eat soemthing before taking the pain killers. That happened to my husband last year and he was in a lot of pain after they finally got it out- they gave hime pain killers- but it still hurt - he found that if he took an advil with the painkillers it stopped thr throbbing- however my husband didn't eat to much and ended up feeling sick from the painkillers. Hopefully once the novacane wears off you wond't have too much pain.... have a wonderful time on your retreat - we look forward to hearing about it when you get back... love to mom and dad too!!!!!

Will pass on your love thanks, I often talk about this site to my friends and family, my family are not on the computer unfortunately. I took my first antibiotic and it knocked me out, I was asleep for 2 hours! Least it's not bleeding, that is the main thing I worry about, especially being away!

Hey brian, isn't it strange that it always happens before we are going for a vacation? I know that every time i went for a vacation, a night before my plane took off, i had troubles with one of my teeth. But i am glad that this problem is over and i hope you will feel good in a few days and enjoy your vacation. I had a teeth surgery two days ago, and it was very hard. i had an infection that could not be cured inside my tooth, and the anaesthetics could not help, so the treatment was very painful, but i am glad it is over, so i do identify with all you've gone through in the last few days. But now all i have to say, is go and enjoy your vacation.:)

Toothache is one of the most unbearable physical pains. I've had twice of these during my earlier days. As I can recall, I really wasn't planning to have my molar extracted because during that time, I was having my 6-month review for the rigid CPA (certified public accountant) Board Exam. There is a certain belief locally that the anaesthesia being injected in the gums promotes memory loss or something to that effect. I was in agony for nearly a month. But the pain knocked me down, so I had no choice but to have it extracted. Anyway, I'm glad to hear you're going on a holiday break. Enjoy & God bless.

I'm so sorry you had to go through that! Tell ya what tho, around here, when the doc can't pull the tooth out root and all, the patient gets lots of shots in the mouth (or a shot of panethol to go under completely) so the doc and surgically remove the tooth. Boy howdy does that cost a lot more. Poor Wolfie! Hope you get feeling better while you are on vacation.

oh goodness wolfie, that made my jaw ache just reading it! I had to have an extraction that was alot like yours, not quite as long to get it out though...but when he was finished, he said, you have to be very careful, this tooth was deep and I can now see the sinus floor...explains why I was having so many sinus headaches. Hope you have continued to get better and that your holiday away has been great!

oh gee, i can imagine how hard it was for both of you and the dentist had gone through that day..i know coz i worked as a dental assistant and i had encountered cases like yours where in the root is so deep and was holding so tight with the gums..sometimes it took us more than an hour to extract the tooth..the worst case i had and would not want to have ever since was when we are extracting only the roots..the tooth has no crown anymore..it was decayed so bad and only had the root which was causing the pain..man, i don't wanna think about how long we had been pulling out the roots..when it came out finally, its just a small root like not half inch..ugh! the worst part is the patient is always complaining about it thats why we had to stop for a min and then continue..great thing you had yours extracted already..

I can definately relate! I have had a molar extracted...actually it was a wisdom tooth and the doctor did a normal extraction. It took two rounds of 6 shots each to numb it, then he did the extraction! OW! But in the end, it was all worth it...the pain was virtually gone and I felt better within a couple days.

I can really understand the pain of toothache i had one out about 6 months ago and it was unbelievably unwilling to come out, it was at the back and i ended up with a bruised face looked like i had done a few rounds with Mike Tyson lol and hubby was asked a few times if he had hit me then there was the whispered comments who said in low voices you can tell me the truth i said the truth is hubby would never hurt me but the dentist did! Enjoy your retreat i will miss you HUGS xxx

Going to the dentist ranks right up there with the most scary things you ever have to do, wolfie. I don'e even want to think about all the anxiety you went through. I'm glad it's all over and you came through none the worse for wear. Enjoy your retreat. You will be missed.
