I remember when I was a kid, Mom washed everything using bleach, she said when she smelled bleach, she knew it was clean. Then came Pine scents, then Lemon was the way to go, then for a while Orange was really popular. Now we have many scents like summer rain and lavender. What scent smells clean to you. Personally I love hanging the laundry out to dry and then smelling that.

You must be very sensitive. I would think the sunshine scent would be a good scent to you for sure.

Mine was started by my Grandma, her house always smelt of Pine-sol and I just love that smell. So to me it's Pine-sol. But I do have to agree with your mother, when I smell bleach I know it's clean, but it irritates my sinuses something terrible.

It is amazing how the scents of youth can continue to affect our attitude as we grow isn't it?

Mistolen makes a whole bunch of scented cleaners..lavender, vanilla, cherry, jasmine, baby powder scents....most of these are sold in most supermarkets, but they also sell them near me in the 99-cent stores.

Deb, I have a load to hang right now. I get pretty tired of all the chemically generated scents that are not real. I like the smell of real oranges and lemons. I buy a product called Simple Green that smells good to me and is an all purpose cleaner. I have too many friends who are allergic to fragrance to really appreciate it in all of my cleaners.

Simple Green has a kind of chlorophyll smell. It is available at Wal Mart, and probably other places as well. You can get it by the gallon at Sam's Club.

For cleaning the house like mopping, Lysol and for laundry, Clothes taken off the line after hanging to dry in the wind and sun. I just had my clothesline reinstalled after it was down for two years due to remodeling. I am delighting in the sweet air and sun dried clothing smell. Nothing like it ever.

Yes, I love the orange scent..and I can understand putting something out to make it smell fresh. We do that with the area rugs at work sometimes.

I'm always drawn to lemon or orange-scenter, often associating it with clean-smelling, followed by bleach--not as pleasant, but registers as "clean." I never was able to think of anything pine-scenterd as clean for some reason, even though I've certainly had my fair share of pine sol-filled moments lol. Perhaps because I find lemon and orange as pleasant, comforting smells maybe. As far the other well-known scents out there, such as ones you usually see for air-freshing products, never did associate those with clean, though they always gave other pleasant reactions. lol I have only had laundry out to dry once, and it sure didn't smell clean haha. I guess direct sunlight helps a bit, ya think? Yup. Never again..

I think people associate pine with clean because it is just an outdoorsy sort of smell. It reminds me of country.

Growing up, I associate the smell of clean by Pinesol. That is what my mom used most often to clean. I always associated it with clean and fresh air. These days the smell of clean to me is really up in the air. My place smells like smoke from my above neighbors and the beside neighbor. Sometimes it even smells like the food the above neighbors are cooking. But whenever I smell a nice perfume or cologne, I think clean. Maybe that is because whenever I smell too much smoke, I smell the sleeve of my shirt just to remind myself there are other smells than smell, well, good. : )

Naty, you must be close to LA. I was there some 25 years ago and was so surprised, you could see the air as you flew in (I noticed the same thing about Atlanta). That is terrible, California is such a beautiful state and with the ocean there, one would think the air should be clean. I prefer orange to lemon and I agree on bleach. But nothing beats the smell of laundry that is hung outside.

Each of my client's use different cleansers to clean their homes. Some use pine, lemon, orange, or vinegar. I can say the cleanest scent I have found is one that is the lemon scented product. It isn't overpowering. My all time favorite scent is the same as yours. This is escpecially true when you hang the clothes on a crisp spring day.

When I was a kid, our big event for the year was driving for the day to Toronto, to the CNE. My mother loved the building where they sold stuff - when you walked in there, you were over-powered with lavender which she too loved. She bought a ton of it, then for the next 3 or 4 months, usually until Christmas, our house wreaked of lavender and I just don't like that smell at all any more. I like Pine in small doses...like the Christmas tree or a wreath.
