I have a degree in Biology and I want to go back to school to get an additional degree for a career change. In the meantime, I need to find a job so that I can save up some extra money for school, books, and some extras. I am going to apply for Children's Place,Barnes and Noble,Victoria Secret's and other retail jobs. On the application it asks for salary desired. I can't expect to make what I made when I worked in a Biology research laboratory so I don't want to ask for too much at the same time I don't want to ask for too little and get underpaid. What is a resonable amount to ask for to get paid a decent amount without getting my application overlooked?

I suggest working fast food chains. I know retail almost have the same rates but in my experience there is more chances for jobs in a a restaurant or fast food chain. The compensation is good when you can work some extra hours.

Do you have any experience in retail at all? Without any retail experience they would probably start you out between $7 and $7.50 and hour. You could ask for a bit more if you have a good recommendation from your old job. Each place you apply to is willing to offer different pay rates but you should also take into consideration the perks. Which place would you yourself shop at? You could get an employee discount.

I do not really know what is the right amount to ask for. I think you can ask for as much as you think that you deserve and see if it works.

I think it depends a lot on what the minimum wage is and even though I'm starting a new job today in retail I don't even know what it is...lol...I should keep up on this but unfortunately I don't. I just want to work to supplement my social security and seriously don't even care just as long as I make some money. I think the going rate right now might be the $7-$8 range. Good luck.
