Have you ever taken part in a medical research study?

In our area they are always recruiting for medical research studies. And, though I am sure that I would qualify for at least one or more of these studies, just the thought is unsettling. I'm not sure whether or not these research companies are planning to try safe medical practices and drugs. Or, whether they will be trying out experimental drugs. I don't want to end up as guinea pig! Have you ever participated in one of these types of medical research studies or trials? What type of procedures were done? Did you receive money for the study? Was it a pleasant or unpleasant experience? If you had the chance, would you do it all over again, or avoid the experience altogether?

I never have participated in a study because I have too many things wrong with me for someone to try to pinpoint just one problem. I think I would throw the study off without meaning to. However, my sister DID participate in a medical research study about 8 years ago. It was on the possibilities of treating and healing severe carpal tunnel cases without surgery. She came in once a week for two months to try new creams, try new physical therapy means, and also they hooked up electrodes to the part of her arm affected. She said the electrodes weren't painful, it was just like a small pinch every couple of seconds. Unfortunately, it didn't work for her, and she had to have the surgery anyway. However, her gas was paid for, the tests were done for free, and she made 250 dollars. She used that money to pay for part of her college semester that year.
