school and fundraisers

It's almost time for school again and this year I am the fundraising chair in the PTO for my school and another local elementary school. I am scared to death to take on this responsibility but I am also looking forward to it. I hope to lower the amount of brochure selling that these young kids have to do although we have a contract with a few people. But by doing this I also need to find a way to generate new (and hopefully more) income for the schools. I found out that Chuck-E-Cheese offers a fundraiser where you invite your schools and they donate 15% of total sales to the school. Since we have two schools I was thinking that maybe 2 nights for each would be a good idea. We also have a restaurant night where you go out to eat and a percentage of the sales are given to the school. I was also looking in to proposing our schools to sign up for UPromise which is totally FREE for parents to sign up for and when you link your credit cards and shoppers cards to your account they donate the money earned from shopping to the school! We already do a reward points program at a local grocery store and this same store participates in UPromise so I was thinking it could kill two birds with one stone. We also do Moo Money which is just collecting the lids of a certain product and turning them in to the school. Parents don't have to buy anything they wouldn't normally- it's just an extra bonus! It's kind of like Campbell's Soup labels and Box Tops for Education. All free programs offered by some great companies. As a parent, what would you like to see done in place of forcing young children (or rather, their parents) to sell magazine products? What would you be willing to spend money on and what would you be willing to participate in?

I wish we didn't need to do the fund raisers at all, but it seems like a neccesary evil. Beside what you have already mentioned, our school did a chilli supper and a silent auction. Each class can donate something for the auction and perhaps you could local businesses to donate also. Good luck. I don't envy you a bit.

I like the silent auction idea! And the chili supper! That reminds me that another event I thought would be good for both the school and would encourage participation would be a consignment sale. Parents would either donate or consign clothing items (keeping school items like too-small clothing in mind) and then we could have a huge sale at the school and people could come and shop. The preferable method would be for all donations of course or I would have a lot of work. Another thing could be a school yard sale event where parents pay so much money to have a table (all proceeds from buying a table going to the pto for the school) and they could sell their stuff. I like the idea of getting the community as a whole involved in our schools. Every potential fundraiser must be brought to the table at the pto meetings but I will definately bring those ideas up!
