How does the film compare with the book?

I've been reading the book recently, and had a look at the graphic novel version using tills from the film. The problem is that compared to the book it makes too much sense, the plot has been compressed/over simplified. Is this the case in the actuall film? The style looks perfect almost real but not real which fits exactly with the subject. I'm not sure about the look being more present day but that matches the books setting being more 60's/70s while suposedly happening in the future.

In some ways the movie was kind of hard to follow, especially being from the area where it was "filmed/set" in. I was busy watching the familiar sights that had been turned into cartoons and trying to pick them out. Shouting "Look that's the 5 freeway" didn't help my sister's concentration, lemme tell you!! And yeah, I think they may have over simplified the film, which actually makes something like this far difficult to follow - the details explain a lot sometimes. Lemme just say, if you read it first, don't expect too much out of the movie!
