direct downloads can be quicker and easier but I prefer torrents because it's more communal - private niche sites tend to have a strong community of people uploading rare things from their collections, and there's more of a focus on sharing files with each other instead of just downloading them plus you don't have the problem of having to wait or pay when trying to download more than one file o...

I use a mix of soulseek, rapidshare (or similar filesharing) link blogs/forums and torrents - either public torrent sites via searching for what I want with google or private forums for certain types of music
