Green tomatoes?

Due to the rain this summer, we, and everyone around us, have a lot of green tomatoes in the garden that they say are not going to ripen. Because it is a community garden, we don't get very many of each thing (we don't want to be greedy), but I did think I would try to make fried green tomatoes, like in the movie. Before I try it, does anyone have any suggestions? I've found a lot of recipes, but the basic idea seems to be: slice tomatoes, dip into beaten egg, dredge in cornmeal or breadcrumbs, fry in oil. I'm going to use cracker crumbs with flour instead of cornmeal, because I don't have any cornmeal nor any money to buy cornmeal (we're flat broke until the end of the month) At any rate, it should be fun! What are your experiences with fried green tomatoes?

I have a friend from the south and she gave me her recipe that her mother used to use. Basically, you slice the tomatoes into circles and then dip them in a little white vingar just to wet them enough to make the coating stick. For the coating, she had me use flour with salt and a lot of pepper. Then I fried them in about an inch or so of oil in a frying pan. They were really easy and my friend was thrilled because they were just the way she remembered them from her childhood. I liked them myself, but I've never tried making them any other way. You should let us know how your's come out. Good luck!

Hmmm...this sounds easy, too. I wonder if I have any vinegar left. Maybe I'll try it several different ways - I've never eaten fried green tomatoes before. Now I'm worried that I just won't like them? But I like regular tomatoes.
