I took some alergy pills yesterday, just the generic ones that you can buy at the grocery store, and I have been so sleepy ever since! I ended up falling asleep when my little boy took a nap yesterday and I was groggy the rest of the day. I still feel kinds funky =) I know it says on the box that it may cause drowsiness but this is almost like I took a sleeping pill or something!! Do they affect you this way?

I find that alot of allergy medicinces make me sleepy too. If the active ingredient in the allergy medicine is Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride (in Benadryl and it's generics) it is going to make you sleepy. Did you know that it is the same ingredient that they put in Tylenol PM and in other over the counter sleeping medicines and then charge you three times more for it? Crazy huh? I always pay attention to active ingredients now to make sure I know what I am buying and to make sure I am not getting ripped off.

I take sleeping pills sometimes and I was just thinking that I could just take an allergy pill instead because they are cheaper!! But with the sleeping pills I am not groggy the next day like I am with the allergy pills.

The sleeping pills that you are taking must have a different ingredient in them then.

Yes, all alergy pills make you feel giddy and sleepy. Even cough syrup does that. I dont know the chemical composition but i myself experienced and very recently doctor adviced me not to drive immidiately after taking a particular syrup for cough.

I love your picture of Dennis, that is sooo cute!!! I guess I can't drive either after taking these pills, that is kinda scary that there is not a better warning on them.

Thanks so much! You are right that most of these medicines dont have any warnings. But i found warnings on Benadryl syrup and Allegra pills. Apart from these two i didn't find warnings on any other.

Whenever a label reads "may cause drowsiness", I know I am going to go to sleep if I take it. I stay away from those medications. I do use loratadine, which is what Claritin is made from. It helps "somewhat". I haven't found one that works 100% of the time.

This happens. Actually one cant blame a medicine for this. I personally take some medicines which have no effect on me. However when my mother takes the same pills she feels drowsy and sleeps for a long period. So i think the medicines have a different effect on different persons.

It depends on how sick I am from the allergy and how strong the pills are....I cannot take Benadryl,it knocks me out!

Depending upon the brand and if they are non-drowsy. Even some non-drowsy ones cause sleepiness. I take Claritin and it doesn't make me sleepy.
